TriEagle Energy reviews 2026: 74/100, TXU’s sister brand and its 60-day catch

Every point in this review traces to a public record: the state’s complaint scorecard, PUCT case files, TriEagle’s own contract and price sheets, its owner’s SEC filings and the BBB. Nobody can buy a score here.

Short answer

TriEagle Energy is a good Texas electricity company by the public record. It scores 74 out of 100, tied for fifth of the 25 companies we’ve rated. The state gives it 4 of 5 for complaints. The catch: its 60-day guarantee only lets you switch to another TriEagle plan. Leaving early costs $20 for each month left, up to $720.

TriEagle Energy at a glance74/100 · Good
What we like
  • Rated 4 of 5 by the state for complaints, March to August 2026
  • Its plain 12-month plan averaged 14.7¢ per kWh, below the Texas average
  • One flat rate with delivery built in, plus a $4.95 monthly charge
  • An A+ at the BBB, where it’s accredited
  • Licensed since 2003, with a bill-help fund called TriEagle Energy Aid
What to watch
  • The 60-day “Tri Us Guarantee” swaps plans; it isn’t a free exit
  • $20 for each month left: up to $240 on 12 months and $720 on 36
  • Sure Value 36 drops its $30 credit in any month under 1,000 kWh
  • Disputes go to arbitration or small claims court, with no class actions
  • A $74,725 state penalty in 2025 over 427 missed credits or refunds

Best for homes that want one steady price and plan to stay a year. Think twice before a 28- or 36-month plan if you might switch companies, because leaving early can cost $560 to $720.

Three moments when the fine print costs money

Here’s what to know before each one.

  1. Joining? The 60-day promise lets you change TriEagle plans, not leave for free.
  2. Leaving? Each month left costs $20, but the last 14 days before your end date are free.
  3. Renewing? Do nothing and you move to a month-to-month price.

01 · The score

How does TriEagle Energy score?

TriEagle earns 74 out of 100, which we rate “good.” It gets full marks for its BBB grade and its time in business, and nearly full marks for price. Its contract costs it the most: it keeps just 5 of 20 points there.

Three things could move it. TriEagle’s monthly complaints climbed to 8 in August and September, and the PUCT’s next scorecard could drop it to 3 of 5 (69, Fair) or lift it to 5 of 5 (79). The EIA posts its next Texas price average on October 23, 2026, which can shift price points either way. And the 2025 penalty leaves our 10-year window in July 2035, which would add 4 points.

Fines and penalties16 / 20One PUCT penalty in the last 10 years: $74,725, ordered July 10, 2025 (Docket 58010). A penalty under $100,000 costs 4 points. We found no Texas Attorney General action, though we couldn’t search every news release.
Contract fairness5 / 20Cancel fee of $20 per month left, up to $240 on Simple Savings 12 (1 of 5); an arbitration clause and a class-action waiver (0 of 4); six extra fees, for agent help, a sixth payment in a month, documents, disconnect notices, disconnects and reconnects (0 of 4); a simple 12-month plan, Simple Savings 12 (4 of 4); no free-cancel days beyond the legal 3 in its contract or fact label (0 of 3).
Price18 / 20Simple Savings 12 at 1,000 kWh: 15.2¢ in Dallas and 14.2¢ in Houston. The 14.7¢ average is 93% of the EIA’s 15.88¢ Texas average for July 2026. 20 − (93 − 90) ÷ 2 = 18.5, and halves round down to 18.
Time in business10 / 10Licensed January 27, 2003, more than 20 years (6); the TriEagle Energy Aid program in its terms (2); a parent, Vistra, that files audited financial statements (2).

Why no points for the 60-day guarantee? It appears only on TriEagle’s website, not in its contract or fact label, and it moves you to another TriEagle plan instead of letting you leave. Our formula counts free-cancel days only when the contract grants them.

02 · Report cards

What do the state and the BBB say about TriEagle?

Both rate it well. The state puts TriEagle in its second-best group for complaints, 4 of 5. The BBB gives it an A+ and lists it as accredited.

PUCT complaint rating: 4 of 5September 2026 scorecard, March to August 2026

The PUCT ranks companies by complaints for every 1,000 customers, then splits them into five groups. TriEagle shares the second-best group with six others, including Gexa, Reliant and Direct Energy. Its sister TXU sits one group higher.

BBB grade: A+, accreditedBBB serving North Central Texas, Oct 15, 2026

We read the grade and the accredited status from the BBB’s search listing. Its full profile sat behind a robot check, so we couldn’t see complaint counts or reviews there. An A+ earns all 5 of our BBB points.

A complaint isn’t a ruling. The scorecard counts complaints “irrespective of whether or not the company was determined to be at fault,” the PUCT says. That’s one reason we use the rating, which also adjusts for how big each company is.

04 · Leaving

What does it cost to leave TriEagle early?

TriEagle charges $20 for each month left on your fixed term. That’s up to $240 on a 12-month plan, $560 on 28 months and $720 on 36. Four exits cost nothing.

  1. 1
    Your first 3 business days

Texas gives you 3 federal business days after you get your terms to cancel a new plan for free. TriEagle’s terms set the cutoff at midnight on the third one.

  2. 2
    The last 14 days

Leave “within 14 days of its expiration date,” the terms say, and you owe no fee.

  3. 3
    Moving out

Send TriEagle proof of your move and a forwarding address. Its terms then waive the fee.

  4. 4
    A change to your terms

If TriEagle sends a notice that changes your contract, you get 14 days to leave without the fee.

The 60-day “Tri Us Guarantee” isn’t a free exit

What TriEagle’s site promisesIts “Why us” page, for new home customers

The promise: if you’re not completely satisfied in the first 60 days, “we’ll help you change to another plan for free.”

What the same page addsThe line that’s easy to miss

The catch: switching providers during your term, or changing plans after the first 60 days, means “a cancellation fee may apply.”

So the promise lets you trade one TriEagle plan for another. It doesn’t let you walk away for free. It also isn’t in the fact label or the terms of service, which TriEagle names as the parts of your contract. If you’re counting on it, get TriEagle’s OK in writing.

One more way the fee can hit. TriEagle’s terms say that if it ends your contract after a disconnection, it may charge the early cancellation fee too. Keeping your account current avoids both.

05 · The credit trap

Why can a 999 kWh month cost more than 1,000 kWh on Sure Value 36?

Because of a $30 bill credit. Sure Value 36’s fact label applies the credit “for each billing cycle in which usage is 1000 kWh or more.” In Houston, 999 kWh costs $158.80 and 1,000 kWh costs $128.95. Using 1 kWh less costs you $29.85.

Our math from TriEagle’s CenterPoint fact labels of Oct 15, 2026: a $4.95 monthly charge plus 15.4¢ per kWh on Sure Value 36 or 13.7¢ on Simple Savings 12, delivery included, before taxes. The shaded band is the only range where Sure Value 36 costs less.

Two labels, one plan. Power to Choose’s plan data flags Sure Value 36 for minimum-usage fees or credits. TriEagle’s note on the same listing says, “No hidden fees or minimum usage penalties.” Both can be true, since a credit isn’t a fee. But miss the credit, and the bill goes up.

When does Sure Value 36 come out ahead? Only in months between 1,000 kWh and about 1,765 kWh in Houston, compared with Simple Savings 12. In Dallas, that window ends near 1,304 kWh. Against the cheaper Simple Savings 28, it shrinks to about 1,428 kWh in Houston and 1,111 kWh in Dallas. Below 1,000 kWh, Sure Value 36 is TriEagle’s priciest plan in every area. 06 · Plans and prices

What does TriEagle Energy charge in 2026?

TriEagle listed 4 home plans in each of its five utility areas on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026. At 1,000 kWh, Dallas prices ran from 14.5¢ to 15.8¢ per kWh and Houston’s from 12.9¢ to 14.8¢, delivery included.

The same pattern holds in Dallas. The 28-month plan saves about $4 a month over the 12-month one at 1,000 kWh. That’s $48 a year, while its top exit fee is $320 higher. The 36-month plan costs more than both at any usage.

09 · Regulatory record

Has TriEagle Energy been fined?

Once in the last 10 years. In July 2025, the PUCT ordered a $74,725 penalty after TriEagle failed 427 times to apply bill credits or refunds owed to customers. TriEagle agreed to pay it, and it had already paid back $28,140.

From the PUCT order
Between February 2014 and June 2024, TriEagle “on 427 occasions, failed to apply bill credits or refunds owed to customers.”

PUCT Docket 58010, order filed July 10, 2025. The order says the credits were owed when customers left an average payment plan but stayed with TriEagle.

  1. 427 times, credits or refunds owed after customers left Average Billing weren’t applied, the order found.
  2. TriEagle provides $28,140 in bill credits or refunds, “including applicable interest.”
  3. Accounts move to TXU’s billing system, which swaps a manual step for an automatic one, the settlement says.
  4. PUCT staff and TriEagle file a settlement. It says a complaint from the PUCT’s Consumer Protection Division led TriEagle to find the problem.
  5. The PUCT orders a $74,725 administrative penalty, which TriEagle agrees to pay.
  6. TriEagle sends the payment, and FedEx confirms delivery the next day.
  7. The penalty leaves our 10-year window, worth 4 points on our scorecard.

The order also says TriEagle “acknowledges the bases for the violations.” It adds that PUCT staff records show no history of similar cases against the company.

On Average Billing now? TriEagle’s terms say that when you leave the plan or close your account, it will “charge or credit you with this cumulative balance.” That’s the step behind the 2025 penalty, so check that line on your next bill.

How we checked: we searched the PUCT’s case files under all six names on TriEagle’s license, by case title and by filing party. A different company, Eagle Energy Partners, L.P., shows up in 2009 cases; it isn’t TriEagle. We found no Texas Attorney General action in PUCT records, in Vistra’s 2025 annual report or in TriEagle’s sworn 2019 filing, which reported nothing on consumer-protection probes. We couldn’t run a full search of the Attorney General’s news releases, so our score assumes there are none.

When Vistra took over in 2019, PUCT staff noted TriEagle’s word that there would be “no changes in customer rates, contract terms, or conditions of service.” Its 2019 filing listed TXU and Value Based Brands, the company behind 4Change, as affiliates. Vistra serves about 2.6 million Texas customers across all its brands, and it doesn’t say how many are TriEagle’s.

A twist from 2015. When TriEagle added the name “Energy Rewards,” TXU objected in a PUCT filing. It said the name “may be vague, misleading or confusing” next to TXU’s own programs. TriEagle agreed the phrase was generic, and the PUCT approved the name. Four years later, Vistra owned both. Those were TXU’s words in a filing, not a PUCT finding.

  • No cancel fee when you move and send proof plus a forwarding address
  • No cancel fee in the last 14 days, or after a notice changing your terms
  • You can still take a problem to the PUCT, despite the arbitration clause
  • TriEagle Energy Aid helps customers in severe hardship
  • Delivery is built into one rate “at no markup,” TriEagle says
Watch out forFrom its terms and its FAQ
  • Disputes go to arbitration or small claims court, with no class actions or jury
  • A “fixed” price can change with utility charges, without advance notice
  • A cancel fee if TriEagle ends your contract after a disconnection
  • A month-to-month price after your term, unless you pick a plan
  • Deposit rules differ: the terms say 65 or older, the FAQ says over 55

Your “fixed” rate isn’t frozen. TriEagle builds delivery into its price per kWh. Its terms say a fixed price “may only change during a contract term to reflect actual changes in TDU charges” and some government fees. Those changes “do not require us to provide you with advance notice,” though each later bill will say a change was made. Our guide to why Texas electric bills run high covers the delivery side.

About deposits. TriEagle’s terms waive the deposit if you’re 65 or older and not behind on an electric account. Its FAQ says over 55 with no missed payments. The terms are the contract, so ask before you count on the FAQ.

What happens when your TriEagle contract ends?

If you don’t pick a new plan, you become a month-to-month customer. You won’t see that plan’s fact label until your last expiration notice arrives.

  1. 1Last third of your termTriEagle sends three expiration notices.
  2. 230 or more days before the endThe final notice comes with the month-to-month plan’s fact label.
  3. 3Last 14 daysSwitch now and there’s no cancel fee.
  4. 4After the end dateYou roll onto TriEagle’s month-to-month plan.

Its site puts it simply: if you don’t choose, “you’ll continue to be our customer and automatically start a month-to-month plan.” TriEagle doesn’t post that home price. The only month-to-month prices it publishes are for businesses. Its “Xpress Flex” plan averaged 17.8¢ to 20.3¢ per kWh across its five areas for October 2026, based on 3,500 kWh a month. That isn’t the home rate, so ask for yours before your term ends.

Mark two dates. Set a reminder 30 days before your end date to start shopping, and another for the start of your last 14 days, when switching is free. A 12-month plan that starts in October 2026 ends in October 2027.

Our guide to what to do when your contract ends walks through the timing. Our fixed vs. variable rates explainer shows how month-to-month prices can move.

From our TriEagle and TXU reviews, scored with the same formula. Each bar shows the points as a share of that category’s top score, starting at zero.

Why the contract gap? On our scale, TXU’s cancel fee on its 12-month plan earns full points, and its terms add a free-cancel window. TriEagle’s $240 top fee earns 1 point, and its 60-day promise lives only on its website. If price matters most, TriEagle’s plain 12-month plan earned 6 more price points than TXU’s.

TriEagle Energy questions, answered

Short answers drawn from state records, TriEagle’s own documents and Vistra’s SEC filings.

Is TriEagle Energy legit?

Yes. TriEagle Energy, LP has held Texas retail electricity license 10064 since January 27, 2003, and Vistra Corp. owns it. We score it 74 out of 100 (Good). The state rated it 4 of 5 for complaints in September 2026, and the BBB lists an A+. Its one recent state penalty was $74,725 in 2025.

Who owns TriEagle Energy?

Vistra Corp., the Irving company that also owns TXU Energy. Vistra’s 10-K, filed February 27, 2026, calls TriEagle Energy, LP “an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Vistra.” Crius Energy bought TriEagle on April 1, 2015, and Vistra closed its purchase of Crius on July 15, 2019. The PUCT approved the change that September.

Is TriEagle Energy the same as TXU Energy?

No, but they’re sisters. Vistra owns both, and TriEagle has used TXU’s billing system since October 2024. Each company has its own license, plans and contract. We score TXU 80 and TriEagle 74. TXU rates higher on complaints and its contract, while TriEagle rates higher on price.

How does TriEagle Energy work?

TriEagle buys power on the wholesale market and sells it to you at a set price per kWh, with delivery built into that rate. Your local utility, such as Oncor or CenterPoint, still owns the wires, reads your meter and fixes outages. TriEagle sends your bill and runs your plan.

What are TriEagle Energy’s rates right now?

On October 15, 2026, Simple Savings 12 cost 15.2¢ per kWh in Dallas and 14.2¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh, delivery included, before taxes. TriEagle listed 4 plans in each city on Power to Choose. Sure Value 36 had the lowest 1,000 kWh price, 12.9¢ in Houston, thanks to a $30 credit.

What is TriEagle’s 60-day Tri Us Guarantee?

It’s a promise on TriEagle’s website to new home customers: if you aren’t happy within 60 days, it will help you change to another TriEagle plan for free. It isn’t a free way out. The same page says leaving for another company can still bring a cancel fee, and the promise isn’t in the contract.

How much does it cost to cancel TriEagle Energy?

$20 for each month left on your fixed term. That comes to as much as $240 on a 12-month plan, $560 on 28 months and $720 on 36. TriEagle’s terms waive the fee if you move and send proof, or if you leave within 14 days of your end date.

Why did my TriEagle bill go up?

Four common causes, all in TriEagle’s contract papers: a Sure Value 36 month under 1,000 kWh loses the $30 credit; a fixed price can change when utility delivery charges change; an ended contract rolls onto a month-to-month price; and leaving Average Billing settles the running balance at once.

How many complaints does TriEagle Energy get?

Texans filed 26 complaints about TriEagle with the PUCT from March through August 2026, the period behind its 4-of-5 rating. The monthly count rose from 1 in April to 8 in both August and September. Yearly totals fell from 151 in 2019 to 51 in 2025.

Has TriEagle Energy been fined?

Yes. The PUCT has penalized it once in the past 10 years: $74,725, ordered in July 2025. Its order says that from February 2014 to June 2024, TriEagle “on 427 occasions, failed to apply bill credits or refunds owed to customers.” TriEagle agreed to pay and had already refunded $28,140.

What happens when my TriEagle contract ends?

If you don’t pick a new plan, TriEagle moves you to its month-to-month plan. Its terms promise three expiration notices near the end, and that plan’s fact label comes with the last one. Switching in the last 14 days before your end date costs no cancel fee.

What is TriEagle Energy’s phone number?

Call TriEagle customer care at 1-877-933-2453, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central, seven days a week. For renewals, its site lists 833-943-2733. For an outage, call your utility instead: Oncor at 1-888-313-4747 or CenterPoint at 1-800-332-7143.
