How does Ambit Energy score?
Ambit earns 41 out of 100, which we rate “poor.” It gets full marks for its BBB grade and its time in business. It gets zero for state penalties, and it loses most of its price and contract points.
- October 16, 2026: 41 at launch.
A state penalty counts against a company for 10 years. Unless a new one comes, Ambit’s fines score stays at 0 until January 14, 2032. Then it climbs to 4, to 12 after October 12, 2033, and to 20 after October 3, 2034. The EIA posts its next Texas price average on October 23, 2026, and each new state scorecard can move the complaint points.

Who owns Ambit Energy, and why does TXU score nearly twice as high?
Vistra Corp. owns both companies. It bought Ambit on November 1, 2019, for $555 million, Vistra’s annual report says. Yet TXU Energy scores 80 and Ambit scores 41. Penalties, complaints, price and contract terms make up the gap.
Our scores, plus each brand’s rating on the PUCT’s September 2026 complaint scorecard, where 5 of 5 means the fewest complaints for its size. All four brands belong to Vistra.
TXU’s points come from our TXU review of October 2, 2026. Each bar shows the share of that category’s top score. The four gaps add up to 39 points.
- 1Penalties: four vs. one
In our 10-year window, the PUCT penalized Ambit four times and TXU once. That alone is a 16-point gap.
- 2Complaints: 3 of 5 vs. 5 of 5
The state compares complaints per 1,000 customers. Ambit sits in the middle group, and TXU in the best one.
- 3Price: 4 points vs. 12
Ambit’s simplest plan runs 21% over the Texas average. TXU’s ran 6% over it when we reviewed TXU.
- 4Contract: 7 points vs. 12
Both lose every point for arbitration. Ambit also loses points for its $199 fee and its lack of a free-cancel window.
How Vistra came to own Ambit
- 1Vistra Corp.Based in Irving, Texas · also owns TXU Energy, TriEagle Energy and 4Change Energy · its annual report is audited by Deloitte & Touche
- 2Volt Asset Company, Inc.The Vistra company that closed the deal on November 1, 2019 · price: $555 million, counting the cash and working capital Ambit came with
- 3Ambit Texas, LLC, doing business as Ambit EnergyPUCT certificate 10117 · “a wholly owned subsidiary of Vistra,” in Vistra’s 2025 annual report
Closer than sister brands. In a July 24, 2026 letter to the PUCT, Ambit calls TXU Energy its “affiliate” and mentions “an officer of both Ambit and TXU Energy.” Ambit’s plan-shopping website even loads its pictures from a web address with TXU in the name.
Older than its own story. Ambit says it began over turkey sandwiches on a spring day in 2006. Its Texas license came first. The PUCT granted certificate 10117 on October 28, 2005, to BVista Energy, L.P., doing business as Blue Vista Energy. The notice went to Jere Thompson, Jr., whom Ambit names as a co-founder. The name changed to Ambit Energy, L.P. in 2006 and to Ambit Texas, LLC in 2009.
Who do you call about an Ambit bill or a power outage?
Call Ambit about bills, plans and moving, using the number on your bill or at ambitenergy.com. When the power goes out, call the utility that owns the lines in your area instead. If Ambit doesn’t fix a problem, the state takes complaints for free.

Need help paying a bill? Ambit’s terms describe Ambit Energy Aid, for customers with severe money trouble. Ambit, its employees and its customers help pay for it, and Ambit says it passes the money to helping agencies across Texas. One part of Ambit’s 2022 penalty was a required $21,250 gift to this fund. See more ways to get help with an electric bill.
Does Ambit’s Free Energy make your power free?
Only part of it. Once 15 qualified customers sign up through your link, Ambit gives you a monthly credit for up to its own charges. Delivery charges and taxes still come due. Drop below 15 in any month, and that month’s credit is $0.
- 115 or more referrals
In Ambit’s words: “Just help 15 (or more) friends become Ambit Customers.” They sign up through your own link. There’s no time limit, and your own account doesn’t count.
- 2Only qualified ones count
Each must be a home customer whose power is on and who has had one full bill. They can’t owe a past-due balance or be on a payment plan.
- 3The credit is an average
It’s set by your referrals’ average energy cost over the last 70 days. It can’t go past your own energy cost.
- 4Delivery and taxes aren’t covered
Ambit says the credit runs “up to your total energy cost (not including taxes, transmission charges and other fees).”

Other Ambit perks. Power Payback pays bill credits of up to $1.00 for each kWh you save when the grid is busy. We found no “Travel Rewards” program for customers on Ambit’s current site. Its trips today are for top consultants, as the consultant section shows.
What does it cost to leave Ambit?
$199. Every fixed plan Ambit offered in Dallas and Houston on Oct 15, 2026, charged that flat fee to leave early, on 12- and 24-month plans alike. It doesn’t shrink as your contract runs down. Moving out with proof costs $0.
A flat cancel fee on every fixed plan, from your first month to your last.
Ambit may pay back your old company’s cancel fee as a bill credit, “subject to review and approval,” with proof.
The T.L.C. Guarantee isn’t a free way out. Ambit’s site says you can “change to a different Ambit term plan any time” once in your first 12 months of service, without penalty. Leave Ambit for another company, and the $199 still applies. The promise sits on Ambit’s website only, not in its fact label or terms, and it’s for Texas only.
Our math, before taxes. Your Ambit price starts at Lone Star Classic 12 for your area and use; type the price from your own bill or fact label instead. The other price starts at the EIA’s Texas average for July 2026. Your contract’s wording governs, and we don’t save what you enter.
Partner toolWe may earn a fee if you sign up. It never changes our scores.
Two more ways out without the fee. Ambit’s terms let you cancel for free within 3 federal business days after you get the terms of service. And if Ambit changes your terms in a way you don’t like, you get 14 days from the notice to cancel at no cost. Our guide to what to do when a contract ends shows when to start shopping.

Watch the 500 kWh column. Budget Relief 12 looks like Ambit’s best deal at 1,000 kWh because of its $50 credit. In a 500 kWh month in Dallas, it’s Ambit’s most expensive plan, at 23.5¢. Our guide to bill-credit plans explains the trap, and we compare free-nights plans and solar buyback plans too.

That’s $14 more a month in Dallas and $20 more in Houston, or $168 to $240 a year. In return, you get $50 a month in Reward Dollars. They aren’t cash, and they don’t come off your bill. Ambit says you can spend them “more than 500,000 ways” and that they “never expire.” If you’d truly use them, the trade may suit you.
One small discount: pick paperless bills and autopay, and Lone Star Classic 12 drops by 0.2¢ per kWh. That’s about $2 a month at 1,000 kWh.
Ambit isn’t on Power to Choose. Here’s how to check its price anyway
Power to Choose is the state’s plan-shopping site. On Oct 15, 2026, it listed 176 plans in Oncor’s area and 181 in CenterPoint’s. None came from Ambit or from its sister brand 4Change. The state’s scorecard still rates Ambit, and we found no record that says why its plans are missing.
- 1Get the fact label
Ask the friend or consultant for the plan’s Electricity Facts Label, or open it from Ambit’s plan page. Every Texas plan has one.
- 2Find your usage
Look at a year of your bills. Pick the label’s column closest to your use: 500, 1,000 or 2,000 kWh.
- 3Write down two numbers
The price in that column and the cancel fee. On Lone Star Classic 12 in Dallas, that’s 19.4¢ and $199.
- 4Compare the same column
Look up plans for your ZIP and compare them at the same usage. The Texas average was 15.88¢ in July 2026.
Our guide to reading a fact label shows where each number sits. Our Power to Choose guide flags the plans that only look cheap.

How many complaints does Ambit Energy get?
Texans filed 94 complaints about Ambit with the PUCT from March through August 2026, the window behind its rating. For its size, the state calls that an “Average Complaint Rate,” or 3 of 5. Billing caused the most complaints, and 16 were about slamming.
The PUCT’s own names are billing, discontinuance, slamming, provision of service, cramming and all other. None were about service quality. A complaint is a customer’s claim, not a finding against Ambit. Source: PUCT complaint statistics, Oct 15, 2026. Bars start at zero.
Calendar years from the PUCT’s company complaint graphs. September 2019 alone had 149 complaints, 129 of them about billing; we found no record that explains that month. Raw counts aren’t adjusted for company size. Bars start at zero.
Ambit drew 95 complaints in that window, the sixth most of the 142 companies on the PUCT’s list. That’s 4.22% of all 2,253. August 2026 had 28, its busiest month this year.
The BBB’s grade uses its own formula and carries just 5 of our 100 points. Its profile for Ambit, in Irving, also lists “Multi-Level Sales” among the company’s business types.
Switched to Ambit without saying yes? That’s called slamming. Call Ambit first. If it isn’t fixed, file a free complaint with the PUCT at 1-888-782-8477. Our guide to filing an electricity complaint walks through the form, step by step.
Has Ambit Energy been fined in Texas?
Yes, four times in the last 10 years, for $804,350 in all. Two smaller penalties, from 2010 and 2012, fall outside our window. In three of the four recent orders, Ambit acknowledged the basis for the violations.
Administrative penalties the PUCT approved. The 2022 order also required a $21,250 gift to Ambit Energy Aid. Our formula takes 8 points for each penalty from $100,000 to $499,999 and 4 for each under $100,000, so 28 in all. Bars start at zero.
What the four orders mean for you
Ambit sent shutoff orders for 905 customers in counties under extreme-weather emergencies, between November 2020 and September 2022. The utilities carried out 136 of them. Ambit acknowledged the bases for the violations.
Your move: get a shutoff notice during a declared weather emergency? Call the PUCT at 1-888-782-8477.
In 2023, Ambit failed 5,564 times to ask on time for a switch hold to be lifted after customers paid off a deferred balance. It also failed 4,848 times to send the release notice. The order says this kept people, for a time, from switching to a company that “may offer lower rates.”
Your move: paid off a payment plan but still can’t switch? Call Ambit, then the PUCT. Our same-day power guide explains how switch holds work.
From 2017 to 2019, Ambit’s online sign-up emails left out the right to cancel 15,729 times. Ambit fixed the email on October 21, 2019, and acknowledged the basis for the violations.
Your move: signed up online? You still get 3 federal business days after receiving the terms to cancel for free.
PUCT staff alleged that Ambit put customers who reconnected after a shutoff on its variable “Ambit Standard Plan” without clear consent. About 8,695 were moved in the first half of 2017, and some saw almost 10¢ more per kWh. Ambit agreed to pay.
Your move: had your power turned back on? Check the plan name on your next bill.
- The PUCT grants certificate 10117 to BVista Energy, L.P., the company that became Ambit.
- Two audit penalties, $22,500 and $35,000. Both are older than our 10-year window.
- $160,000 penalty over the Ambit Standard Plan (Docket 48859).
- Vistra completes its purchase of Ambit.
- $21,250 penalty plus a $21,250 gift to Ambit Energy Aid, over sign-up emails (Docket 52550).
- $300,000 penalty over shutoff orders during weather emergencies (Docket 55337).
- $323,100 penalty over switch holds (Docket 56821).
- The PUCT’s scorecard rates Ambit 3 of 5 for March to August 2026.
- The earliest date Ambit’s fines score can rise, if no new penalty comes.
How we checked: we searched the PUCT’s case files under every name on Ambit’s license, plus BVista and Blue Vista. “Ambit” turned up 28 cases, including all six penalty cases; the other two names turned up only license paperwork. Our web searches found no Texas Attorney General action, but the AG’s own site search wasn’t working for us. A settlement without a news release could be missed that way.
Is Ambit Energy a pyramid scheme?
We found no court or government agency that has called it one. Ambit’s owner calls it a “direct selling business.” Ambit says its consultants earn bonuses for signing up customers and for helping the consultants on their team do the same. The BBB files it under “Multi-Level Sales,” or MLM. Here’s what the records say, in their own words.
How Ambit sells. Ambit says it is “primarily marketed through a direct sales channel of Independent Consultants,” and that more than 600,000 have joined. It belongs to the Direct Selling Association. Its start-a-business page calls the cost to start “minimal” but gives no price, and says Ambit “makes no guarantee or promise of income or business.” Days after the purchase closed, Vistra said the deal brought “a proven direct sales channel along with an impressive network of consultants.”
| Record | What it says | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Trade Commission case list | “No results found” for Ambit | Checked Oct 15, 2026 |
| Texas Attorney General | No action found in our searches | The AG’s site search wasn’t working for us |
| New York Attorney General, Feb 21, 2019 | A $1.5 million penalty. The AG said its investigation found Ambit “Promised its marketers high incomes that were not generally achieved.” | Settled in December 2018 |
| Vistra’s 2025 annual report | Ambit’s direct selling “could be found by regulators not to be in compliance with applicable law or regulations” and “may be required to alter its compensation practices” | A risk its owner lists |
| Vistra’s 2019 annual report | Rules for direct sellers aim to stop “fraudulent or deceptive schemes, sometimes referred to as ‘pyramid’ or ‘chain sales’ schemes.” Vistra says it tries to comply but “cannot provide assurance.” | Its owner’s own words |

From Ambit’s earnings disclosure for January 1 to December 31, 2019, the newest one Ambit links as of Oct 15, 2026. Marketing consultants, the starting level, were 91.82% of paid consultants. “Actively engaged” means earning at least $100 and signing up at least one customer or consultant. Bars start at zero.
| Level | Share of paid consultants | Average | Median |
|---|---|---|---|
| National | less than 1% | $333,766.80 | $172,486.13 |
| Executive | less than 1% | $38,369.97 | $21,305.05 |
| Senior | 3.32% | $4,233.19 | $1,220.85 |

Exact figures from Ambit’s 2019 statement. Ambit counts Marketing consultants who were active for even a single day that year.
How top consultants earn trips
Twice a year, Ambit takes qualified National, Executive and Senior Consultants and their guests on what it calls “a spectacular vacation.” In the contest running from August 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027, the top 12 Senior Consultants by points win.
| A new customer | 100 points |
|---|---|
| If that customer picks a “Standard/Preferred” plan | 100 more points |
| A new recruit, once certified | 200 points |
| A promotion to National Consultant | 5,000 points |
Ambit’s “Standard/Preferred” list includes Lone Star Classic, Free & Clear Nights, Secure Savings, Summer Break, Budget Relief and Ultimate Perks. Under these rules, a new customer on one of those plans earns a consultant 200 points, the same as a new recruit. A customer on another plan earns 100.
No court or regulator in the records we checked has called Ambit a pyramid scheme, and we don’t either. Here’s what the records do show. Ambit’s own 2019 numbers put the median Marketing consultant’s pay at $0.00. New York’s Attorney General said Ambit promised its marketers incomes “not generally achieved.” And Ambit’s owner warns that regulators could find its direct selling out of compliance.
If a friend is selling you Ambit, judge the power plan by its fact label, not by the business pitch.
What fees does Ambit Energy charge?
Beyond the $199 cancel fee, Ambit’s terms list six extra fees, from $2.50 to $40, plus a 5% late fee. You can dodge all six if you pay on time, on your own, with autopay.
| Fee | Amount | How to avoid it |

| Early cancellation | $199 | Wait for your end date, or move and show proof |

| Returned payment | Up to $30 | Keep money in the account; a returned autopay is $25 |
From Ambit’s Texas terms of service, version of December 22, 2025. Our score counts the six fees from agent payments through reconnect orders. Late, returned-payment and cancel fees don’t count as extra under our rules.
- Ambit pays the cost of arbitration on claims up to $75,000, unless a claim is frivolous
- Small claims court and PUCT complaints stay open to you
- Beat Ambit’s last offer in arbitration, and it pays at least $10,000 plus double your lawyer’s fees
- No cancel fee if you move and give a forwarding address
- If Ambit cuts your power during a switch, it pays your first month’s bill
- Binding arbitration, with no class actions or class arbitrations
- Only the legal 3 business days to cancel for free
- The T.L.C. Guarantee swaps plans; it doesn’t waive the $199
- Six extra fees on top of late and returned-payment fees
Ambit’s terms put it in capital letters: “DISPUTE RESOLUTION BY BINDING ARBITRATION: PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY. IT AFFECTS YOUR RIGHTS.” If Ambit later changes that clause, you have 30 days to say no to the change.

None of these were in Texas, and none count in our score. Customer cases in other states were settled, dismissed or won by Ambit. A claim in a lawsuit is only an allegation unless a court decides it.
| Case | What it was about | How it ended |
|---|---|---|
| New York Attorney GeneralNew York, 2018 | Savings claims, sign-ups without consent, costlier plans without notice, and income promises to marketers | Settled in December 2018 with a $1.5 million penalty. The AG noted Ambit had already agreed to more than $20 million in customer refunds in a class action. |
| Silvis v. Ambit EnergyFederal court, Pennsylvania | A class action over variable rates | Settled. The court approved it on August 16, 2018: refunds of 15% or 2% of what customers paid, up to $9.3 million if everyone claimed. There was no ruling on the claims. |
| Kostovetsky v. AmbitFederal court, Illinois | Claims that Ambit broke rate promises and moved a customer to a pricier plan | Ambit won. The court ruled for Ambit before trial, and the case closed March 10, 2017. |
| Little v. Ambit NortheastFederal court, New Jersey | A customer class action | A judge gave early approval to a class settlement on October 23, 2019, and the case closed July 10, 2020. |
| Bochat v. Ambit IllinoisFederal court, Illinois | Illinois natural gas supply | Dismissed January 27, 2025. The customers appealed, and we didn’t check the appeal’s outcome. |
Court records come from federal dockets on CourtListener, a free site run by the nonprofit Free Law Project. The New York details come from the Attorney General’s release of February 21, 2019.
The New York Attorney General said its investigation found that Ambit “Misrepresented that consumers would achieve savings” and “Signed up consumers with Ambit without their consent.” Those findings are about New York. Texas customers get their own protections, like the 3-day cancel window and the PUCT’s complaint line.
Thinking about TXU or another company instead?
TXU, Ambit’s sister brand, beats it 80 to 41. TriEagle, another Vistra brand, scores 74. Champion Energy tops our list at 96. Whichever you pick, read its fact label at your own usage first.

Short answers from state records, court records and Ambit’s own documents.
Is Ambit Energy legit?
Yes. It’s a licensed Texas electricity company, PUCT certificate 10117, owned by Vistra, TXU’s parent. But its record is the weakest we’ve scored: 41 out of 100. The state rates it 3 of 5 for complaints, and it paid four state penalties from 2019 to 2024. The BBB gives it an A+.
Is Ambit Energy a pyramid scheme?
We found no court or government agency calling it one: no FTC case, and no Texas Attorney General action in our searches. Ambit is a direct-selling company. In December 2018, it settled with New York’s Attorney General for $1.5 million; the AG said Ambit promised marketers incomes “not generally achieved.”
What company owns Ambit Energy?
Vistra Corp. A Vistra company bought Ambit on November 1, 2019, for $555 million, Vistra’s annual report says. Vistra also owns TXU Energy, TriEagle Energy and 4Change Energy. Ambit keeps its own Texas license, certificate 10117, and a 2026 state filing calls TXU its “affiliate.”
Why is Ambit Energy so expensive?
Its simplest plan, Lone Star Classic 12, cost 19.4¢ per kWh in Dallas and 18.9¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh on October 15, 2026. That’s about 21% above the 15.88¢ Texas average for July 2026, or about $33 more a month. The records we read don’t give a reason, so we won’t guess.
Why can’t I find Ambit on Power to Choose?
Ambit listed no plans on Power to Choose, the state’s shopping site, on October 15, 2026, and its sister brand 4Change listed none either. To compare, get the Ambit plan’s fact label, find the price at your usage, and check the same usage for plans in your ZIP.
What is the Ambit Energy cancellation fee?
$199. Every fixed plan Ambit offered in Dallas and Houston on October 15, 2026, charged that flat fee to leave early, for 12- and 24-month plans alike. You owe nothing if you cancel within 3 federal business days of getting the terms, or if you move and show proof.
Does Ambit’s T.L.C. Guarantee let me cancel for free?
No. Ambit’s website says the T.L.C. Guarantee lets you change to a different Ambit term plan once in your first 12 months without a penalty. It doesn’t waive the $199 fee if you leave Ambit. It’s for Texas only, and it isn’t written into the fact label or terms.
Will Ambit pay my old provider’s cancellation fee?
It may. Ambit’s site says new Texas customers “may qualify for reimbursement of up to $250” of a past provider’s cancel fee, paid as a bill credit. It’s subject to Ambit’s review and approval, and you need proof of the fee. Leaving Ambit early later costs $199.
How does Ambit’s Free Energy work?
Get 15 or more qualified customers to sign up through your Ambit link, and you earn a monthly credit. It matches your referrals’ average energy cost, up to your own. It never covers taxes or delivery charges. Each referral must be a home customer who is paid up and not on a payment plan.
How much do Ambit consultants make?
The newest earnings statement Ambit links, as of October 2026, covers 2019. That year, Marketing consultants were 91.82% of paid consultants, with a median of $0.00 and an average of $131.27. The average across all 105,908 active consultants was $679.81. National consultants, under 1%, averaged $333,766.80.
How many complaints does Ambit Energy get?
Texans filed 94 complaints about Ambit with the PUCT from March through August 2026, and the state rates it 3 of 5, an “Average Complaint Rate.” Billing caused 43 and slamming 16. From April through September 2026, its 95 complaints ranked sixth of 142 companies.
Has Ambit Energy been fined or sued?
Yes. The PUCT approved four Ambit penalties from 2019 to 2024, totaling $804,350, over shutoff orders, switch holds, sign-up emails and a plan change. Outside Texas, New York’s Attorney General settled with Ambit for $1.5 million, and customer lawsuits were settled, dismissed or won by Ambit.
