Short answer

Amigo Energy is a licensed Texas electricity company with a weak record. It scores 54 out of 100 (Poor), 21st of 25 companies we’ve rated. The state rates it 2 of 5 for complaints, and its complaint count just doubled. Its Power Perks 12 plan costs 9.9¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh in Houston, but 22.9¢ at 500 kWh.

Amigo Energy at a glance54/100 · Poor
What we like
  • Help, fact labels and contracts in Spanish
  • A plain 24-month plan with no base charge and no low-use fee
  • Free AutoPay and more than 800 cash pay stations
  • A bill-help fund built from other customers’ donations
  • Licensed by the state since 2004
What to watch
  • Rated 2 of 5 for complaints, with 48 filed from April to September 2026
  • Its only 12-month plan on Power to Choose needs 1,000 kWh to earn a $125 credit
  • $175 to leave early on every plan it lists there
  • Small claims court or arbitration only, and no class actions
  • About 23¢ per kWh if your contract runs out

Best for homes that use at least 1,000 kWh every month, but not a lot more. Think twice if your use dips in mild months, or if you might miss your renewal date.

Picking a plan, renewing or behind on a bill?

Here’s the first thing to check in each case.

  1. Picking a plan? Price Power Perks at your lowest month, not your average.
  2. Renewing? Amigo lets you renew up to 45 days early. Miss the end date and you roll onto about 23¢.
  3. Behind on a bill? Find your earliest shutoff date, then ask for a payment arrangement.

01 · The score

How does Amigo Energy score?

Amigo Energy earns 54 out of 100, which we rate “poor.” Price is its best category, with all 20 points, but that rests on a bill credit that needs 1,000 kWh. It loses the most points on complaints and on its contract.

Two dates are already on the calendar. On October 8, 2028, Amigo reaches 20 years from the license date on the state’s scorecard, worth 2 more points. Around October 16, 2029, its 2019 penalty leaves our 10-year window, worth 8 more. The PUCT posts a new complaint scorecard each month, and each step up or down moves the score 5 points.

BBB rating2 / 5C+, not accredited. On Oct 15, 2026, a BBB search for “Amigo Energy” in Houston led to one shared Just Energy Group Inc. profile with that grade. A C+ earns 2 points.
Fines and penalties12 / 20One PUCT penalty in the last 10 years: a combined $475,000 in Docket 49688 (final order filed Oct 16, 2019), naming Fulcrum Retail Energy dba Amigo Energy and two sister companies. A shared penalty counts in full, and one from $100,000 to $499,999 costs 8 points. No Texas Attorney General action found.
Contract fairness4 / 20$175 cancel fee (3 of 5); binding arbitration plus a class-action waiver (0 of 4); three extra fees: up to $25 per disconnect notice, up to $25 to disconnect and $4.99 in months under 400 kWh (1 of 4); no simple 12-month plan on Power to Choose (0 of 4); no free-cancel days past the legal 3 (0 of 3)
Price20 / 20Power Perks 12, the only 12-month plan Amigo lists on Power to Choose, costs 11.8¢ in Dallas and 9.9¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh. The 10.85¢ average is 68% of EIA’s 15.88¢ Texas average for July 2026, which earns the maximum 20. It’s a bill-credit plan, so that price holds only at 1,000 kWh or more. At 999 kWh it’s 24.3¢ in Dallas and 22.4¢ in Houston; at 500 kWh, 24.7¢ and 22.9¢.
Time in business6 / 10The scorecard lists its “Date Licensed” as October 8, 2008, 18 years ago (4 points); its terms describe a bill-help fund (2 points); no published audited financials (0)
Total54 / 100Poor (under 60)

Two calls could have gone the other way. The state’s license directory dates Amigo’s certificate to January 30, 2004, which would add 2 points. Amigo’s own website also sells 12-month plans that aren’t on Power to Choose. Under every other reading we tried, the score stays between 50 and 59, so the rating is Poor either way.

Which Amigo plan fits your usage?

Amigo’s two main home plans on Power to Choose work very differently. Power Perks 12 takes $125 off any month you use 1,000 kWh or more. Basics PTC 24 charges one flat energy rate. The right pick depends on your lowest month, not your average.

Power Perks charges 17¢ per kWh for energy in Dallas, more than twice the 8.2¢ on Basics PTC 24. The $125 credit is what pulls its price down. It’s all or nothing: miss 1,000 kWh by a single kWh, and the whole credit is gone. Amigo’s fact label also warns that a partial first or last month may not get the credit.

Same plan name, two prices. On Oct 15, 2026, Amigo’s own sign-up system priced Power Perks 12 at 9.0¢ per kWh in Dallas at 1,000 kWh, with a 14.2¢ energy charge. Its Power to Choose fact label said 11.8¢, with a 17¢ energy charge. In Houston, the website showed 8.3¢ against 9.9¢. 03 · Complaints

How many complaints does Amigo Energy get?

More than it did. Texans filed 48 complaints about Amigo’s company with the PUCT from April through September 2026. That’s double the 24 from the six months before. For its size, the state rates it 2 of 5, “Higher than Average Rate of Complaints.”

The busiest year was 2019, with 137 complaints. With three months still to go, 2026 already has 63, just 2 short of all of 2025.

How to read these numbers. The PUCT counts every complaint it handles, “irrespective of whether or not the company was determined to be at fault,” or whether the complaint was adequately resolved. Its 1-to-5 rating uses complaints per 1,000 customers over six months, so a big company isn’t marked down just for being big.

07 · Paying your bill

How long does Amigo give you to pay your bill?

About 16 days. Amigo says bills are due about 16 days after they’re mailed, and a PUCT rule sets the due date at least 16 days after a bill is issued. You can’t choose your own due date. Pay late, and a 5% fee lands on your next bill.

From a new bill to the earliest possible shutoff: 27 days

  • Day 17: a 5% late fee, and the first day a disconnect notice can go out5% + up to $25
  • Day 27: the earliest shutoff, after 10 days of noticeUp to $25

Our math from PUCT rule §25.480 and Amigo’s terms: 16 days, plus 1, plus 10. Mail time can add days. Homes with critical or chronic care status get 21 days of notice instead of 10.

Can’t pay on time? Do these first

  1. 1
    Ask for a payment arrangement

Amigo’s terms say an arrangement lets you pay after the due date, as long as you pay before the next bill is due.

  2. 2
Ask about a deferred payment plan

Its terms list this as a second option. Ask Amigo how it would work for your balance.

  3. 3
    Ask about bill help

Amigo’s terms say it works with local agencies to share money that other customers donate to people in need.

  4. 4
    Call 2-1-1

Amigo’s terms list 2-1-1 as a place to find local help with bills.

Think a bill is wrong? Dispute it in writing within 60 days. Amigo’s terms say a bill dispute is waived unless Amigo hears from you in writing within 60 calendar days of the bill date. To avoid paying late, note that AutoPay is free, and Amigo lists more than 800 pay stations in and around Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and South Texas. 08 · Renewal

What happens when your Amigo contract ends?

If you don’t pick a new plan, Amigo moves you to its month-to-month plan. In October 2026, that cost about 22.9¢ per kWh in Dallas and 23.2¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh, roughly 45% above the 15.88¢ Texas average.

09 · Regulatory record

Has Amigo Energy been fined?

Yes. A 2019 PUCT order set a $475,000 penalty shared by Amigo’s company and two sister companies, plus $225,000 for bill-help programs. It’s the only state penalty naming Amigo’s company in the last 10 years. It costs 8 points here until about October 2029.

  1. A $15,000 PUCT penalty for Vega Resources, then doing business as Amigo Energy (Docket 37263). It’s older than our 10-year window.
  2. A $13,000 PUCT penalty for Fulcrum Retail Energy, doing business as Amigo Energy (Docket 39047). This one is also outside the window.
  3. A final order in Docket 49688 sets a combined $475,000 penalty for Just Energy Texas, Fulcrum Retail Energy (Amigo) and Tara Energy, which are “jointly and severally liable.” They also had to put $225,000 more into their bill-help programs that year.
  4. The $475,000 is paid, a sworn statement from Just Energy’s finance chief says.
  5. $125,000 goes to BakerRipley in Houston and $100,000 to Sharing Life Community Outreach.
  6. The penalty passes our 10-year window. If nothing else changes, Amigo’s fines score rises from 12 to 20.

What the 2019 case was about

  1. 1
    Switch holds lifted late

PUCT staff alleged the companies didn’t ask in time to lift 253 switch holds in 2014. A switch hold can keep a home from changing providers. Fulcrum had 44 of them, and the companies said no customer complained about the timing.

  2. 2
    A low-income discount

The order covers a discount on bills mailed in September 2013. It says 3,602 customers were affected, 736 of them Fulcrum’s. The companies applied the rest of the discount by February 2014.

  3. 3
    Shutoffs over money not owed

The order’s findings say at least 40 customers were disconnected for nonpayment over balances they wouldn’t have owed. Ten of them were Fulcrum’s.

The companies acknowledged “the basis for the violations alleged by Commission Staff,” the order says. The case was settled, and these details come from the order itself.

How we checked: we searched the PUCT’s case files under Fulcrum, Amigo, Tara Energy, Tara Power, Just Energy and Hudson Energy. Since October 2016, Docket 49688 is the only penalty case that names Amigo’s company. A $60,000 penalty in 2022 named only Just Energy Texas, so it doesn’t count against Amigo. We found no Texas Attorney General action in PUCT records or in Just Energy’s 2022 SEC report, but the Attorney General’s own site search wasn’t working when we checked.

From PUCT license records, the September 2026 complaint scorecard and PUCT complaint statistics. Ratings cover March to August 2026. Filings from July 2025 also list Accent Energy Texas LP (license 10078) as a sister company; its names include Accent Energy, Dynowatt and IGS Energy.

Notice the two Tara names. “Tara Energy Resources” sits on Amigo’s license, while Tara Energy LLC holds a license of its own. Before you sign, check the license number on the fact label: Amigo’s is 10081. Our Just Energy review covers Amigo’s sister brand Just Energy, which scored 52.

How Amigo got here

  1. The PUCT grants certificate 10081. Before 2009, Vega Resources held it under the Amigo Energy name.
  2. Fulcrum Retail Energy takes over the license and keeps the Amigo name.
  3. Just Energy (U.S.) Corp. buys the company.
  4. After losses from the February 2021 winter storm, Just Energy gets creditor protection from a Canadian court.
  5. Just Energy leaves that process “with a new ownership group” and stops filing reports with the SEC.
  6. IGS Energy completes its purchase of Just Energy, Amigo included. The PUCT approves the change that September.
  7. A change to Fulcrum’s “internal organizational structure” takes effect, its PUCT filing says.

When IGS agreed to the deal, it said Just Energy “will continue to operate independently under its existing brands.” In Fulcrum’s 2025 filing, each officer lists Just Energy as the employer, and its 2026 filing still uses Just Energy email addresses. So far, the records show Amigo run by Just Energy staff under a new owner.

About arbitration. Section 19 of Amigo’s terms gives you two paths for a claim: small claims court or binding arbitration. Does Amigo Energy offer service in Spanish?

Yes. Amigo runs a full Spanish website and posts Spanish fact labels, terms and customer-rights sheets. Its Spanish FAQ lists 1-866-787-2644 and says service is available in Spanish and English.

Spanish fact labelPower Perks 12, version of July 1, 2026

Su precio puede cambiar para reflejar cambios en los precios de mercado, cargos de TDU/TDSP… This line says the price can change with market prices.

English fact labelThe same plan and version

Your price can change to reflect changes in TDU/TDSP charges, changes to the ERCOT or Texas Regional Entity administrative fees… No mention of market prices.

Both versions of Amigo’s terms, in section 10.1, limit changes to a fixed price to utility charges, ERCOT fees and new laws. The “precios de mercado” words match Amigo’s label for its variable plan instead. This is a mismatch between two documents, and we don’t know why it happened. If you sign up in Spanish, ask Amigo to confirm in writing that your price is fixed.

  • Power to Choose lists 29 English and 29 Spanish Amigo plans, but the Spanish listings link to the English customer-rights sheet. Amigo posts its own Spanish version.
  • One Spanish Power Perks listing for Lubbock shows a 60-month term on Power to Choose. Its Spanish fact label says 12 months.
  • The Spanish terms are version 14 and the English terms are version 15, both dated July 14, 2026.

Amigo edges its sister brand 54 to 52. They tie on complaints (10), contract (4), price (20) and the BBB (2). Amigo keeps more points for fines (12 vs. 8), and Just Energy gets more for time in business (8 vs. 6).

On Power to Choose, the two list the same core prices under different plan names, so switching between them changes little. For a stronger record, our ranking starts with Champion Energy at 96. 14 · Questions

Amigo Energy questions, answered

Short answers from state records and Amigo’s own documents, checked October 15, 2026.

Is Amigo Energy reliable?

By the public record, it’s below average. Amigo scores 54 out of 100 on our scorecard, 21st of 25 Texas companies. The state rated it 2 of 5 for complaints from March to August 2026, and it shared a $475,000 state penalty in 2019. It has held a Texas license since 2004.

Who owns Amigo Energy?

Amigo Energy is a trade name of Fulcrum Retail Energy LLC, Texas license 10081. Its direct parent is Just Energy (U.S.) Corp., and IGS Energy has owned the Just Energy group since July 1, 2025. The same license also carries the Tara Energy Resources and Tara Power names.

Is Amigo Energy expensive?

It depends on how much power you use. On Oct 15, 2026, Power Perks 12 cost 11.8¢ per kWh in Dallas at 1,000 kWh but 24.7¢ at 500 kWh. Basics PTC 24 stayed near 15.5¢. Amigo’s month-to-month price ran about 23¢, well above the 15.88¢ Texas average.

How long does Amigo Energy give you to pay your bill?

About 16 days after the bill is mailed, Amigo says, and a PUCT rule requires at least 16 days after a bill is issued. If your payment hasn’t arrived by the due date, a 5% late fee follows. A disconnect notice then gives at least 10 days, or 21 for critical and chronic care.

How many complaints does Amigo Energy get?

Texans filed 48 complaints with the PUCT about Fulcrum Retail Energy, Amigo’s company, from April through September 2026. That’s double the 24 from October 2025 through March 2026, and 23 were about billing. For its size, the state rated it 2 of 5 for March to August 2026.

What is Amigo Energy’s customer service number?

Call 1-888-469-2644, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central. Amigo’s Spanish FAQ lists 1-866-787-2644. To cancel within 3 business days, its terms list 1-844-784-6251. For outages, call your utility, such as Oncor or CenterPoint.

How much does it cost to cancel Amigo Energy?

$175 per meter on every plan Amigo listed on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026. Canceling is free until midnight on the third federal business day after you get the contract. Amigo’s own website also showed a 12-month plan, Apartment Essentials 12, with a $0 exit fee.

What is the catch with Amigo’s Power Perks 12 plan?

Its low price needs at least 1,000 kWh in a billing cycle, when a $125 credit kicks in. At 999 kWh, a Dallas bill is $124.76 higher than at 1,000. Months under 400 kWh add $4.99. It beats Amigo’s Basics PTC 24 only from 1,000 to about 1,420 kWh in Dallas.

Does Amigo Energy offer service in Spanish?

Yes. Amigo has a Spanish website, Spanish fact labels and Spanish terms, and its Spanish FAQ lists 1-866-787-2644. One gap: the Spanish Power Perks label says the price can change with “precios de mercado,” or market prices. The English label and both versions of the contract don’t say that.

What rate will I pay if my Amigo contract runs out?

Amigo’s month-to-month rate, unless you choose a new plan. In October 2026, that came to about 22.9¢ per kWh in Dallas and 23.2¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh. Amigo lets you renew up to 45 days early, and its final notice goes out at least 14 days before the end.

Has Amigo Energy been fined by the state?

Yes. A PUCT order filed in October 2019 set a combined $475,000 penalty for Amigo’s company and two sister companies, plus $225,000 for bill-help programs. The case covered late switch-hold releases and a 2013 low-income discount. Smaller penalties from 2009 and 2011 fall outside our 10-year window.

Why is Amigo’s website price different from Power to Choose?

We don’t know why. On Oct 15, 2026, Amigo’s sign-up system priced Power Perks 12 at 9.0¢ per kWh in Dallas at 1,000 kWh, while its Power to Choose fact label said 11.8¢. We couldn’t open the website offer’s label, so ask for the fact label of the exact offer before you sign.
