Illinois electricity rates: ComEd & Ameren, current and historical
What you really pay for electricity in Illinois: a typical homeowner’s bill now versus two years ago, and every rate behind it. Every figure has a date and a source. New prices start October 1, 2026. Transmission charges change again in January 2027, and supply prices reset on June 1, 2027.
A typical ComEd homeowner now pays about $173 a month for power — $48 more than in October 2024. ComEd’s price is 10.103¢ per kWh from October 1, 2026 through May 2027. Ameren’s is 10.441¢ on the first 800 kWh a month and 8.262¢ after that. Delivery and fixed charges come on top of those prices. The typical bill is for a house using about 930 kWh a month, before taxes and city fees.
What a typical ComEd homeowner pays now
A typical house in ComEd territory now pays about $173 a month for power, before taxes and city fees. Two years ago, the same home paid about $125. That’s $48 more every month — about $576 a year — for the same amount of power.

What would your bill have cost in 2024?
Type in your average monthly electric bill. We’ll show what the same electricity cost in October 2024 — and how much more you’re paying now.
Want to shrink that number? The free eligibility check shows whether solar fits your home. It takes about a minute, with no obligation.
Check my eligibility →Nothing you type is sent or stored. The math runs in your browser. We work backward from your bill using today’s charges before taxes, so the results are estimates. The electric-car option adds about 300 kWh a month. That’s roughly 1,000 miles at 0.3 kWh per mile, charged at home. It’s for illustration only — your car and driving will differ.
What this means if you go solar
Every kilowatt-hour your panels make is one you don’t buy at these prices. A typical ComEd homeowner uses about 11,200 kWh a year. A 7 kW system makes about 8,000 kWh — roughly 70% of that. Our calculator puts year-one savings around $1,160 and payback at about 10 to 18 years at October 2026 prices. And the power you make yourself isn’t touched by the next price reset.

Current Illinois supply rates
The Price to Compare is what your utility charges per kilowatt-hour for electricity if you haven’t switched to another supplier. Every supplier offer is measured against it. It is not your whole bill.

The headline price resets in June and October. But ComEd also adds a monthly adjustment that trues up its actual costs, as a credit or a charge. It credited 0.142¢ in August 2026 and added 0.247¢ in July. So the rate on your bill is rarely the exact headline price. We add each month’s figure when the Illinois Commerce Commission posts it, and log it in the changelog.

Summer figures and monthly adjustments: Plug In Illinois (Illinois Commerce Commission), which had not yet posted October figures on September 29, 2026. Transmission charges, part of both prices, change each January. ComEd also bills a flat 0.1722¢/kWh renewable energy adjustment to all customers from June 2026, in the taxes and fees section.

Delivery charges and fixed charges
Supply is roughly half of an Illinois electric bill. These are the charges underneath it. You pay them on every kilowatt-hour, no matter who supplies your power, and switching suppliers doesn’t change them.

ComEd changes only supply by season. Its delivery charge is one rate all year. A “summer ComEd delivery rate” figure you may see on solar and comparison sites does not exist in the tariff.
Ameren changes both by season. Its delivery charge is tiered from October through May and flat in summer. From October 1, the winter tiers apply again. That’s why an Ameren bill swings more between seasons than a ComEd bill with the same usage.
These are the per-kilowatt-hour rates. To see them added up into a monthly bill at typical usage, see the average Illinois electric bill. For solar owners, how exported power is credited against these charges changed for systems connected since 2025: ComEd net metering and Ameren net metering. What stays on the bill after solar: your electric bill after solar.
Source: Citizens Utility Board January 2026 rate guide, reflecting the Illinois Commerce Commission’s December 2025 delivery-rate order effective January 1, 2026, checked against ComEd Rate DS and Ameren Rate DS-1 tariff sheets. Ameren’s $8.55 customer charge is its tariffed $7.42 plus supplemental customer charges. Electric-heat and multi-family customers pay different figures. City taxes and franchise fees vary and are not included.
Capacity auction results
Illinois sits in two different wholesale power markets: ComEd in PJM and Ameren in MISO. Each runs an auction that pays power plants to be available when needed. Those prices flow into the supply rates above.

MISO sets a separate price for each season. The summer price is the one usually quoted, but it isn’t the whole year. Sources: PJM Base Residual Auction results; MISO 2026/27 auction results (April 28, 2026). Happening now: PJM’s one-time Reliability Backstop Procurement takes bids from September 30 to October 21, 2026, with results by December 2. It seeks to fill a 6,831 MW shortfall from the 2028/29 auction, under a $555/MW-day price cap (PJM board decision). Capacity is one input into a supply rate, not a formula for your bill.
For how these auctions turn into what you pay, and why the two markets moved so differently, see the ComEd explainer and the Ameren explainer.

Illinois electricity rates: common questions
What is the average electric bill for a ComEd homeowner?
About $173 a month from October 2026, for a single-family home using about 930 kWh a month — about $48 more than in October 2024. That’s before taxes and city fees, which add more. It uses ComEd’s current price, delivery charge and fixed charges, and the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s usage figure for single-family homes in the Midwest.
What is the current ComEd rate per kWh?
From October 1, 2026 through May 2027, ComEd’s Price to Compare is 10.103¢/kWh. That covers supply and transmission, and it’s about 3% below the summer price of 10.399¢. A monthly adjustment moves the rate on your bill up or down a little. Delivery charges, taxes and $19.07 in monthly fixed charges come on top.
What is the current Ameren Illinois rate per kWh?
From October 1, 2026 through May 2027, Ameren Illinois’s Price to Compare is 10.441¢/kWh on the first 800 kWh a month and 8.262¢ beyond. That’s about 8% below this summer’s 11.326¢, but about 24% above last October. Delivery is charged separately — 4.572¢ on the first 800 kWh and 2.427¢ beyond from October through May — plus $14.51 in monthly fixed charges.
What is a Price to Compare?
It’s the price per kilowatt-hour your utility charges for electricity if you haven’t switched to another supplier. The Illinois Commerce Commission publishes it through Plug In Illinois so you can measure any supplier offer against it. It covers supply only — an offer that beats it still leaves delivery, taxes and fixed charges unchanged.
When do Illinois electricity rates change?
Supply prices change twice a year, on June 1 and October 1, for both ComEd and Ameren. Transmission charges, which are part of the price, change each January — the next change is January 2027. Delivery rates change when the Illinois Commerce Commission approves a new rate order; the current ones started January 1, 2026. ComEd also adds a monthly adjustment between resets.
What are the October 2026 electricity rates in Illinois?
ComEd: 10.103¢/kWh. Ameren Illinois: 10.441¢/kWh on the first 800 kWh a month and 8.262¢ beyond. Both run from October 1, 2026 through May 2027, as confirmed by the utilities and reported by the Citizens Utility Board on September 28, 2026.
Why is ComEd’s rate different from the one I was quoted?
Most likely the monthly adjustment. ComEd’s headline price holds for the season, but a monthly adjustment trues up the actual rate — it credited 0.142¢ in August 2026 and added 0.247¢ in July. Comparison sites almost always show the headline price, not the rate on your bill.
Is Ameren more expensive than ComEd?
It depends on how much you use. From October, Ameren’s price is 10.441¢ on the first 800 kWh — a little above ComEd’s 10.103¢ — but 8.262¢ beyond that, which is lower. Delivery and fixed charges differ too ($14.51 for Ameren, $19.07 for ComEd). How it all adds up into a monthly bill: the average Illinois electric bill.
Do capacity auction results change my rate directly?
Not directly, and not by a formula you can work out at home. Capacity is one input into the supply prices utilities buy and pass through at the next reset. The auction results are an early signal, not a calculation. For how it works, see why is my ComEd bill so high.
What is PJM’s backstop auction?
A one-time auction PJM is holding to fill a 6,831 MW shortfall from its 2028/29 capacity auction. Bids run September 30 to October 21, 2026, with results by December 2 and a price cap of $555/MW-day. Its effect on ComEd bills won’t be known until the results are in and the costs are assigned.
How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home in Illinois?
At ComEd’s October 2026 prices, about $49 a month before taxes for about 300 kWh — roughly 1,000 miles at 0.3 kWh per mile. In October 2024, the same charging cost about $35. Your car, driving and rate plan will change the number; ComEd’s hourly pricing can lower it for overnight charging.
How often is this page updated?
Whenever a tracked figure changes at the source: the June 1 and October 1 resets, ComEd’s monthly adjustment, delivery-rate orders, PJM and MISO auction results, and the yearly Illinois Shines price change. Every change is logged with its date in the changelog. We never estimate figures before they’re published.
