Reliant free nights and weekends: what the two plans really give

Reliant sells one plan that is free every night and one that is free every weekend, and neither is on Power to Choose. Here is what each label says, what it leaves out, and how to test it on your own meter file.

Short answer

Reliant sells two free-time plans: Free Overnight, free from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. every day, and Truly Free Weekends, free from 8 p.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Monday. On the labels we read in September and October 2026, both take $0 off the energy charge and the delivery charge in the free hours. Neither is on Power to Choose. The old name "Truly Free Nights" now opens the Free Overnight page.

Reliant's plan pages say each offer is for new residential customers only and that Reliant may discontinue it without notice. Check your ZIP on Reliant's site, and save the label the day you sign up.

The 4 things to know

  • Delivery is free too. Both labels print $0 for the delivery charge in the free hours. Some other free-time plans, like TXU's, still bill it.
  • Neither plan is on Power to Choose. The state's list shows Reliant's Power On plans. These two are sold on Reliant's own site.
  • The label price is a guess about you. It assumes a share of your use falls in the free hours. If less of yours does, you pay more.
  • New customers only. Reliant's plan pages say the offers are for new residential customers and can end without notice.

Built on public data from Reliant Energy's own plan pages and Electricity Facts Labels, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (the PUCT) and the Power to Choose plan list. Labels dated September 13 to October 4, 2026; pages and list read Oct. 25, 2026.

01 · The plans

What are Reliant's free nights and weekends plans?

Reliant has two. Free Overnight is free every night. Truly Free Weekends is free from Friday evening until Monday morning. We read the labels Reliant files for them, and we read Reliant's own plan pages.

Names have changed over the years. Reliant's old web address for "Truly Free Nights" now opens the Free Overnight plan page. A "100% Solar" version of the weekends plan also has labels, and those say 100% renewable. Older guides list names like "Truly Free Weekends 18" and prices that do not match today's labels. Read the label that matches your ZIP.

Power to Choose, run by the PUCT, listed 30 Reliant rows on Oct. 25, 2026, and every one was a Power On plan. The two free-time plans are not there. Reliant shows them by ZIP on its own site, and files the labels as public PDFs.

02 · Free delivery

Does Reliant charge for delivery in the free hours?

No, on the labels we read. Both labels print $0 for the delivery charge in the free hours. That matters because delivery is a real cost in every other hour. A plan that waives only the energy charge, like TXU's, still bills it.

In the Oncor area, delivery was 6.867¢ per kWh on these labels, and in the CenterPoint area 6.533¢. So each kWh you use in a free hour skips that charge, as well as the energy charge. Our guides to Oncor's delivery charges and CenterPoint's explain who sets them.

A plan cannot give power away. The paid hours carry the cost. That is why the energy charge outside the free hours is the number to watch.

03 · Worth it?

Is Reliant free nights worth it?

Only if a large share of your power lands in the free hours. The label prices assume 32%. On October 25, 2026, Free Overnight needed 55.8%% of a 1,000 kWh month in the free hours to match the cheapest plain plan in the Oncor area. Truly Free Weekends needed 56.8%%.

That is a lot. Nine night hours are 37.5% of a day. Homes use less power at night than in the afternoon, so the share is usually lower than the clock suggests. Weekend hours are about 31% of the week. A home that reaches more than half is rare, and it tends to be one where something big runs on a schedule.

Your own share is the number that matters, and your Smart Meter Texas file has it. The check reads the file in your browser and prices both plans on your real months.

Free-hours checkFree. Your file is read in your browser and goes nowhere.

Your bill names it. It is not the company you pay for power.

Use the 15-minute CSV from Export My Report.

Pick your delivery company, then add your file. The answer shows what share of your power falls in each plan's free hours.

This is an estimate from Reliant's labels, before taxes and city fees. Your file stays in your browser. To get it, see our Smart Meter Texas guide.

If your share comes out below the share each plan needs, a plain plan beats it. The tool shows today's number for you.

04 · Pick one

Which one fits, overnight or weekends?

Match the plan to when your home uses power. Overnight fits homes with big loads at night. Weekends fits homes whose use is lopsided toward Saturday and Sunday.

  • Free Overnight: an electric car that charges at home overnight
  • Free Overnight: a pool pump, laundry or a dishwasher you can put on a timer
  • Truly Free Weekends: a second home used mostly on weekends
  • Truly Free Weekends: weekday use that is low because no one is home
  • Either plan: working from home with the air conditioner on in the afternoon
  • Either plan: a steady load all week, because the paid hours still carry the price

We found no exclusion for electric cars, batteries or solar panels on the labels we read. Reliant's full terms of service were not part of our read, so ask Reliant if one applies to you.

05 · Reliant vs TXU

How do Reliant's plans compare with TXU's?

Reliant's two plans free more of the bill in their free hours, because they waive delivery too. TXU's Free Nights & Cool Summer waives only the energy charge, and it shuts out homes with electric cars, batteries or solar.

06 · The fine print

What are the catches?

Read four things: who can join, how long the price holds, what leaving costs, and what can change the price. All four are on the label or on Reliant's plan page.

  • Who can join. Reliant's plan pages say new residential customers only.
  • How long the price holds. The label says the price may change only for real changes in delivery charges, grid fees charged to loads, or new laws and rules.
  • What leaving costs. The 12-month labels list a $150 fee through the end of the term. The label says it does not apply if you move and give a forwarding address.
  • A short trial. The Truly Free Weekends page describes a 90-day, one-time switch to another Reliant plan with no fee. The Free Overnight page we read did not say.

After you get your written terms, you also have three business days to cancel a new plan with no fee. That is a separate right from Reliant's own offers.

07 · Check one

How do you check a Reliant free plan before you sign?

Enter your ZIP on Reliant's site, open the label for your delivery company, read six lines, and test them against your own file. It takes about ten minutes.

  1. 1
Pick the plan for your ZIP.

The price and the label depend on your delivery company.

  2. 2
    Open the Electricity Facts Label.

Reliant files one for each plan, term and delivery area.

  3. 3
    Find the free-hours note.

It sits under the price table with a star.

  4. 4
Find the energy charge outside the free hours.

That is the price of every paid kWh, before delivery.

  5. 5
Find the share the price assumes.

It is printed above the price table.

  6. 6
Run your Smart Meter Texas file above.

Then save the label the day you sign.
