How does Just Energy score?
Just Energy earns 52 out of 100, which we rate “poor.” It gets full marks for price, but only because its one 12-month plan hits a low price at exactly 1,000 kWh. It loses most of its points on complaints, its contract and two state penalties.
- October 15, 2026: 52 at launch.
The 2019 penalty leaves our 10-year window in October 2029, worth 8 points back, and the 2022 penalty in August 2032. The state’s next complaint scorecard will include September 2026, Just Energy’s busiest complaint month this year. We re-score when new state data posts.
90–100 Excellent80–89 Very good70–79 Good60–69 FairUnder 60 Poor
That puts Just Energy near the bottom of the 25 Texas companies we’ve scored, tied with 4Change Energy and ahead of only Acacia Energy and Ambit.
All 25 companies we’ve scored, with the same public-records formula and bars from zero. Scores for the 14 we reviewed first are as of October 13 to 14, 2026; the 11 added October 16 are as of October 15 to 16, 2026. See every Texas score side by side.

Just Energy quick facts
What is Just Energy’s phone number?
Call 1-866-587-8674 for bills, plans and moving. Just Energy’s fact labels and terms list it, with hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Central time. Other jobs have their own numbers.
Power out? Call the company that owns your lines
These outage numbers come from Just Energy’s own terms. Paying by card or bank account? Just Energy’s billing page says it can refuse those methods after two returned or reversed payments in four months, so keep the cash pay stations in mind.
What would it cost to leave Just Energy?
It depends on the calendar. If you switched to Just Energy, its terms let you cancel for free until midnight on the third federal business day after you got your contract. After that, leaving early costs $175 on every plan it lists.
Federal business days skip weekends and federal holidays. Your contract’s own wording governs, so check it. This isn’t legal advice, and we don’t save what you enter.

Other ways out without the fee: moving out, if you show proof of the move, and changes the company makes to your contract terms, which come with their own notice. Just Energy’s terms also say a customer who leaves gets a final bill, and the $175 fee is per meter.
Why can using 1 kWh less cost $125 more?
Because of a bill credit. Smart Choice - 12, Just Energy’s only 12-month plan, takes $125 off any bill of 1,000 kWh or more. Use 999 kWh and you lose the whole credit. In Dallas, that month costs $242.49 instead of $117.73.
Our math from Just Energy’s Dallas fact labels of Oct 15, 2026: energy charges of 17¢ and 8.2¢ per kWh, plus Oncor delivery of 6.8673¢ per kWh and $4.06 a month, before taxes. Smart Choice adds a $4.99 fee in months under 400 kWh. Bars start at zero.
Before taxes. Smart Choice - 12 and Basics PTC - 24 prices come from Just Energy’s fact labels, with delivery at Oncor’s and CenterPoint’s current rates. Your first and last bills may miss the credit, its fact label says.
Partner toolWe may earn a fee if you sign up. It never changes our scores.
When does Smart Choice win? Only from 1,000 kWh up to about 1,420 kWh a month in Dallas, or about 1,810 kWh in Houston. Below 1,000 kWh, or above those levels, Just Energy’s own single-rate plan costs less. Spring and fall months are when most Texas homes dip under 1,000.
What does Just Energy charge in 2026?
Just Energy listed 5 home plans each in Dallas and Houston on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026. At 1,000 kWh they run from 9.9¢ to 15.5¢ per kWh, delivery included. All five charge $175 to cancel.
What’s the 60-month plan? Basics PTC - 60 locks the same single rate as the 24-month plan for five years. The $175 fee still applies if you leave early, and a lot can change in five years: a move, solar panels or a better price.

How many complaints does Just Energy get?
Texans filed 160 complaints about Just Energy with the PUCT from April through September 2026, the fourth most of any electricity company in the state. For its size, the state rates it 2 of 5, “Higher than Average Rate of Complaints.”
The PUCT’s names: billing, provision of service, slamming (switching your provider without permission), discontinuance and cramming (unauthorized charges). These are complaints filed, not findings against the company. Source: PUCT Customer Complaint Statistics, Oct 15, 2026.
29 of its 160 complaints were filed as slamming, behind only TXU’s 32. That’s 18% of its complaints, compared with 11% for TXU and 7% for Reliant.
The BBB lists Just Energy Group, Inc. in Houston with a C+ grade. Customer reviews don’t count toward the BBB’s letter grade.

Has Just Energy been fined?
Yes, twice in the last 10 years. In 2019, it shared a $475,000 state penalty with its sister brands, plus $225,000 for bill help. In 2022, it paid $60,000 over contract language about arbitration.
- The PUCT grants retail electric provider certificate 10052.
- The PUCT approves a $475,000 combined penalty for Just Energy, Amigo Energy and Tara Energy (Docket 49688), plus $225,000 for bill-help programs. The case involved switch holds released late in 2014 and a 2013 low-income discount problem. The companies acknowledged the basis for the alleged violations.
- After Winter Storm Uri left it with about $250 million in storm charges, the parent company files for creditor protection in Canada, plus Chapter 15 in Houston.
- A $60,000 PUCT penalty (Docket 53285): its 2014–2020 terms said it could require binding arbitration. The order notes it never actually required any home customer to arbitrate, and the settlement admits no wrongdoing.
- The sale to its lenders closes, and the company leaves creditor protection. Old shareholders got nothing.
- IGS Energy of Ohio completes its purchase of Just Energy.
- The PUCT’s scorecard rates Just Energy 2 of 5 for March to August 2026.
How we checked: we searched the PUCT’s case files under every Just Energy name and found no other penalty cases in the last 10 years. A 2014 penalty of $164,000 is older than our window. We found no Texas Attorney General action. Elsewhere, Massachusetts reached a $4 million agreement with Just Energy in 2014, in which the company denied wrongdoing; out-of-state matters don’t count toward a Texas score.
Who owns Just Energy, and are Amigo and Tara the same company?
IGS Energy, a private company from Dublin, Ohio, has owned Just Energy since July 1, 2025. Amigo Energy and Tara Energy belong to the same group, and on Power to Choose the three list the same prices under different plan names.
Before IGS, the company went through Canada’s creditor-protection process after Winter Storm Uri. A Canadian court record says Texas made up about 47% of its margin at the time. Your plan doesn’t end if your provider changes hands, and Just Energy’s terms let it assign a contract to another provider without your consent. Our Amigo Energy review covers the sister brand.
What fees does Just Energy charge?
Beyond the $175 cancel fee, its terms list a $25 disconnect-notice fee, a $25 disconnection fee and a $4.99 charge in months under 400 kWh. Late payments add 5%.
- Three notices before a fixed plan ends, the last at least 14 days out
- After a contract ends, a month-to-month plan you can leave with no fee
- Deposit waivers for customers 65 and older who are current, and for victims of family violence
- Spanish fact labels and terms for every listed plan
- Binding arbitration or small claims court, and no class actions
- If its suppliers declare force majeure, it may bill a market price or suspend the contract
- Time-of-use customers who add solar can be moved to a variable plan
- Your first and last bills may miss the $125 credit
The 2022 penalty was about terms that said Just Energy could require arbitration. Today’s terms describe arbitration as your choice against small claims court, and they still waive class actions. Read section 19 of the terms before you sign.
