Tara Energy review 2026: 61/100. Is it reliable, and who owns it?

We graded Tara on public records alone: state complaints, penalties, its contract, its prices, its license and its BBB grade. No company can buy a higher grade from us.

Short answer

Tara Energy is fair, not great. It scores 61 out of 100 on our public-records scorecard. The state rates it 3 of 5 for complaints, a step above its sister brands Amigo and Just Energy. The catch is its 12-month plan: in Dallas, a 999 kWh bill costs $124.76 more than a 1,000 kWh bill.

Tara Energy at a glance61/100 · Fair
What we like
  • Rated 3 of 5 by the state, best of the three Just Energy brands
  • No slamming complaints from April to September 2026
  • A Texas license since 2002
  • Help in English and Spanish
What to watch
  • Its one 12-month plan on Power to Choose needs 1,000 kWh to earn $125
  • $175 to cancel any plan it lists
  • Arbitration and a ban on class actions in its terms
  • Part of a shared $475,000 state penalty in 2019
  • About 23¢ per kWh on its posted month-to-month rate (July 2025 label)

Best for homes that use 1,000 to about 1,400 kWh every month of the year (about 1,800 in Houston). Think twice if any of your bills land under 1,000 kWh. Run your own months through the cliff checker first, or ask about Simple Choice 12, a no-credit plan Tara offers on its website but did not list on Power to Choose on Oct 16, 2026.

Do these three things first.

  1. Pull your last 12 bills. Any month under 1,000 kWh loses the $125 credit.
  2. Find “PUCT License #” on the fact label. The Tara we scored is 10051.
  3. Price the whole market at your ZIP before you agree to a $175 cancel fee.

01 · The score

How does Tara Energy score?

Tara earns 61 out of 100, a “fair” grade. It gets full marks for price, but only for homes that reach 1,000 kWh. Its contract costs it the most points, then complaints, then one shared state penalty.

At 61, Tara sits one point above our Poor line. Each step on the state’s 5-step complaint scale is worth 5 points to us, so one step down would mean 56. The 2019 penalty leaves our 10-year window around October 16, 2029, which would add 8 points. We re-score when new state data comes out.

That puts Tara 16th of the 25 Texas companies we’ve scored, just behind Reliant and Frontier at 62 and just ahead of Payless Power at 60.

We scored Tara with the same formula, and the same judgment calls, as its sister brands Amigo Energy (54) and Just Energy (52). Their 12-month plans match. The gap comes from each license’s own state record.

Time in business8 / 10Licensed since March 12, 2002, per the state scorecard (6 points); a bill-help fund in its terms (2 points); no published audited financials (0)

Why Tara tops its sisters: it scores 9 points above Just Energy because the state rates Tara’s license 3 of 5, not 2, and Tara wasn’t part of Just Energy’s $60,000 penalty in 2022. It scores 7 above Amigo: 5 points on complaints and 2 for its older license.

03 · The 999 kWh cliff

How does Tara’s 999 kWh cliff work?

Value Choice - 12 is Tara’s only 12-month plan on Power to Choose. It takes $125 off any bill of 1,000 kWh or more. Use even 1 kWh less and the credit is gone. In Dallas, that turns a $117.73 bill into a $242.49 bill.

Value Choice - 12 and Basics PTC - 24 prices come from Tara’s fact labels of Oct 16, 2026; Simple Choice 12 prices come from Tara’s sign-up system that day, because we couldn’t download its label. Delivery uses the Oncor and CenterPoint charges printed on those labels. Tara’s label says the credit may not apply to a first or last bill that covers part of a month. We don’t save what you type.

When does Value Choice actually win? Against Basics PTC - 24, only from 1,000 kWh to about 1,420 kWh a month in Dallas, or about 1,810 kWh in Houston. Below 1,000 kWh you get no credit at all, and in Dallas you pay an energy rate about twice as high as Basics. Our guide to bill-credit plans shows how other companies set the same kind of line.

04 · Plans and prices

What are Tara Energy’s rates in October 2026?

On Oct 16, 2026, Tara listed 5 home plans each in Dallas and Houston on Power to Choose. At 1,000 kWh they ran from 9.9¢ to 15.5¢ per kWh with delivery. All 5 carry a $175 cancel fee.

Spread over 3 months, the Dallas 1,000 kWh price is about 11.5¢, by our math. Tara also lists plans for AEP Texas, TNMP and Lubbock homes.

Not on Power to Choose: Simple Choice 12Tara website only

Tara’s own site sells a 12-month fixed plan with no bill credit. Power to Choose didn’t list it on Oct 16, 2026. Tara’s sign-up system showed these prices that day:

Simple Choice 12 prices from Tara’s sign-up system, October 16, 2026

It adds a $4.95 monthly charge, a $4.99 fee under 400 kWh and a $175 cancel fee. We couldn’t download its fact label, so ask Tara for it and read it before you sign.

A website plan with the same name was priced lower that day. Tara’s sign-up system also priced a website version of Value Choice 12 at about 9.8¢ in Dallas and 9.1¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh, with the same $125 credit line. Power to Choose showed 11.8¢ and 9.9¢. We couldn’t pull those website labels either. It may not be the same product, so compare both and ask Tara before you choose.

Before you sign up

Checked Oct 16, 2026: none of Tara’s 5 Power to Choose plans was a plain 12-month plan. The 12-month one leans on a credit, and the plain ones last 24 or 36 months.

Complaints have fallen two years in a row, from 51 in 2023 to 37 in 2024 and 26 in 2025. Of the 10 filed from April to September 2026, 7 were about billing, 2 about disconnection and 1 about getting service. The state counts a complaint “irrespective of whether or not the company was determined to be at fault,” and it warns that small companies’ ratings can swing “based on only a few complaints.” See complaints for every Texas electricity company.

07 · Regulatory record

Has Tara Energy been fined?

Once in the last 10 years. In October 2019, the PUCT approved a $475,000 combined penalty for Tara and its two sister companies. The order made all three “jointly and severally liable,” so each could be held to the full amount.

What PUCT Staff alleged about Tara in 2019 (final order, Docket 49688)
24switch holds not lifted on time in 2014, out of 253 for all three companies
22customers hit by a timing problem with a state low-income bill discount, out of 3,602
15customers “disconnected for nonpayment over balances that would not have been owed,” out of at least 40

A switch hold blocks a home from moving to a new electricity company. The discount problem involved bills mailed in September 2013. Source: PUCT Docket 49688, final order filed October 16, 2019.

These counts are Commission Staff’s allegations, as the order recites them. The companies said no customer complained about the switch holds. The order says the three companies “acknowledge the basis for the violations alleged by Commission Staff.” The settlement adds that signing it “does not admit the truth or accuracy of any such disputed claims.”

  1. The PUCT approves retail electric provider certificate 10051 for Tara Energy, Inc.
  2. Tara pays a $13,000 PUCT penalty (Docket 38839). The order describes a 2010 state audit. Among its findings: sign-up forms and contracts were “in English only rather than the languages used in the marketing of the product.” The deal says paying is not an admission of liability.
  3. The PUCT approves the $475,000 combined penalty for Just Energy, Amigo Energy and Tara (Docket 49688). The three must also put $225,000 toward bill-help programs in 2019.
  4. The companies pay the $475,000, says a sworn statement filed with the PUCT. That December they give $100,000 to Sharing Life Community Outreach and $125,000 to BakerRipley in Houston.
  5. The state scorecard rates Tara 3 of 5 for March through August 2026.
  6. The 2019 penalty passes out of our 10-year window. If nothing else changed, Tara’s score would rise to 69.

How we checked: we searched the PUCT’s case files for Tara, Tara Energy, Tara Power, Smart Prepaid, Just Energy, Fulcrum and Hudson Energy. Only two penalty cases name Tara, and only the 2019 case is inside our window. Just Energy’s 2022 penalty named Just Energy Texas LP alone. A search of the Texas Attorney General’s site found no action naming Tara, though that check isn’t complete.

08 · Who owns it

Who owns Tara Energy?

IGS Energy does, through Just Energy. IGS finished buying Just Energy on July 1, 2025. Its April 2025 release named Tara Energy as one of Just Energy’s four brands. IGS describes itself as “private and family-owned.”

How close are Tara and Just Energy?

Very close. Tara’s July 2025 state filing lists five people, with titles including CEO, CFO and COO, as employed by Just Energy. A July 2026 filing says that list has changed and keeps the new one confidential. Tara’s sign-up system says the Tara name and design are Just Energy trademarks, used under license. And Tara’s terms still say a critical care customer must “pay Just Energy for services provided.”

We also lined up Tara’s terms (version of July 14, 2026) against Amigo’s and Just Energy’s. With brand names hidden, the first 20,000 characters matched each sister’s at 99.4%.

09 · Fees and contract

What fees are in Tara Energy’s contract?

Beyond the $175 cancel fee, Tara’s terms allow up to $25 for each disconnect notice, up to $25 for a disconnection and a 5% late fee. Value Choice - 12 adds $4.99 to any bill under 400 kWh.

From a missed due date to a shutoff

  1. 1
    The bill arrives

State rules set the due date at least 16 days after the bill is issued.

  2. 2
    The due date passes

Tara can add a one-time late fee of 5% of the past-due balance.

  3. 3
    A disconnect notice

It can go out no sooner than the day after the due date. Each one can carry a fee of up to $25.

  4. 4
    The shutoff

It can come no sooner than 10 days after the notice, or 21 days for critical and chronic care homes, and not on a weekend or holiday. A fee of up to $25 can apply.

  5. 5
    Getting power back

Tara’s terms say reconnection “will require payment by credit card or cash.”

By our math, the earliest shutoff comes about 27 days after a bill is issued, before mail time. Short on money? Tara’s terms offer payment arrangements and deferred payment plans, and our bill help guide lists other aid.

In your favorFrom its terms and website
  • A month-to-month plan after your term, with no cancel fee
  • Free autopay and over 800 pay stations
  • Same-day move-ins are often possible with a smart meter if you enroll before noon
  • Deposit waivers for some customers 65 and older and for victims of family violence
Watch out forFrom its terms of service
  • Binding arbitration or small claims court, and no class actions
  • Bill disputes must reach Tara in writing within 60 days
  • After two or more bounced payments in 4 months, it may refuse card and bank payments
  • In a force majeure event, it may bill a market price or suspend your contract

When your term ends: Tara’s terms promise three notices, the last at least 14 days before the end. State rules require the last one at least 30 days before a 12-month plan ends (16 TAC §25.475(e)). If you do nothing, you roll onto a month-to-month plan. Its variable-rate labels put that at about 22.9¢ per kWh in Dallas and 23.2¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh, 44% to 46% above the Texas average. You can leave it with no fee, so mark the end date. Here’s what to do when a contract ends.

10 · Good to know

Four Tara details worth knowing before you call

These come straight from Tara’s own pages and papers. None of them changes the score, but each one can change your bill or your plans.

  1. 1
    Read the Spanish label closely

The Spanish fact label for Value Choice - 12 says its price can change with “precios de mercado,” or market prices. The English label doesn’t say that. Both versions of Tara’s terms limit fixed-price changes to utility charges, grid fees and new laws.

  2. 2
    No deposit can mean prepaid

Tara’s sign-up system says its no-deposit, pay-as-you-go service comes from “our affiliated company Smart Prepaid Electric.” Its no-deposit page first sets the two apart, then calls them “functionally the same thing.” Ask which one you’re buying.

  3. 3
    Solar owners, check the rules

Every Tara fact label we read says it buys back extra solar power. Its website-only Solar Power Rewards plan pays a 6¢ per kWh credit, but its sign-up system lists a $14.95 monthly charge and a $375 cancel fee. Its Free Nights plans don’t take solar homes.

  4. 4
Fee protection comes as a membership

Tara promotes GoodBundle, which offers “waived late payment fees” and “disconnection notice fee protection.” Its page shows no price. Autopay, which Tara says is free, is another way to stay clear of late fees.

Tara, Amigo or Just Energy: what’s the real difference?

On Power to Choose, all three sell the same 12-month deal at the same prices, under terms that are almost word for word the same. The difference is each license’s state record, and Tara’s is the strongest of the three.

If you’ve already settled on this plan, the price won’t help you pick a brand. The record behind the license might.

Tara Energy questions, answered

Quick answers from state records and Tara’s own documents.

Is Tara Energy reliable?

By the public record, it’s fair. Tara scores 61 out of 100 on our scorecard. The state rates its license 3 of 5 for complaints, and Texans filed 10 complaints about it from April through September 2026. Outages are fixed by your local utility, not by Tara or any other electricity company.

Who owns Tara Energy?

IGS Energy, a private company, has owned Tara through Just Energy since July 1, 2025. Just Energy (U.S.) Corp. took over Tara’s parent company on October 1, 2011. A PUCT filing records Tara’s “change in upstream ownership on July 1, 2025,” and IGS lists Tara as one of Just Energy’s four brands.

What does Tara Energy do?

Tara sells electricity plans to Texas homes and businesses. It’s a retail electric provider with PUCT license 10051, in Texas since 2002. Its terms say it “does not produce, transmit or distribute electricity.” Your utility, such as Oncor or CenterPoint, owns the wires, reads the meter and fixes outages.

Is Tara Energy the same company as Just Energy?

Same family, different license. Tara Energy, LLC holds PUCT license 10051, and Just Energy Texas LP holds 10052. Both belong to Just Energy, which IGS owns. On Power to Choose on October 16, 2026, their 12-month plans had the same prices, the same $125 credit and the same $175 cancel fee.

What is Tara Energy’s customer service number?

Call 1-866-438-8272 for bills, plans and moves. Tara lists hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Central time, with help in English and Spanish. To cancel within 3 business days, call 1-844-784-6312. For an outage, call your utility.

How much does Tara Energy charge to cancel?

$175 per meter on every plan Tara listed on Power to Choose on October 16, 2026, from 3 to 36 months. You avoid it by canceling before midnight on the third federal business day after you get your contract, or by moving and showing proof. Its month-to-month plan has no cancel fee.

What happens if I use 999 kWh on Tara’s Value Choice - 12?

You lose the $125 credit, which needs 1,000 kWh or more on the bill. In Dallas, a 999 kWh bill comes to $242.49 before taxes, and a 1,000 kWh bill comes to $117.73, by our math from Tara’s October 16, 2026 fact label. One kWh less costs $124.76 more.

What is Tara Energy’s Simple Choice 12 plan?

It’s a 12-month fixed plan with no bill credit, sold on Tara’s own website but not listed on Power to Choose on October 16, 2026. That day, Tara’s sign-up system priced it at 15.9¢ per kWh in Dallas and 15.7¢ in Houston at 1,000 kWh. We couldn’t download its fact label.

Has Tara Energy been fined by the state?

Yes. In October 2019, the PUCT approved a $475,000 combined penalty for Tara, Just Energy and Amigo Energy, with all three liable for the full amount, plus $225,000 for bill-help programs. Tara also paid a $13,000 PUCT penalty in December 2010. We found no Texas Attorney General action naming Tara.

Are Tara Power and Tara Energy Resources part of Tara Energy?

Not the license we scored. Those two names sit on Fulcrum Retail Energy LLC’s license, 10081, which also sells as Amigo Energy and was rated 2 of 5 by the state in September 2026. Tara Energy is license 10051, rated 3 of 5. Check the license number printed on your fact label.

Does Tara Energy offer no-deposit electricity?

Yes, but ask what kind. Tara’s sign-up system says its no-deposit, pay-as-you-go service comes from “our affiliated company Smart Prepaid Electric,” a name on Tara’s own license. Critical care customers can’t use it. Tara also waives deposits for some customers 65 and older and for victims of family violence.

What happens when a Tara Energy contract ends?

Tara’s terms promise three notices, the last at least 14 days before your term ends. State rules require the last one at least 30 days before a 12-month plan ends (16 TAC §25.475(e)). Do nothing and you move to a month-to-month plan. Its labels put that near 22.9¢ per kWh in Dallas at 1,000 kWh, about 44% above the July 2026 Texas average. You can leave it with no fee.
