BKV Energy reviews 2026: 82/100, the state’s top rating and a C- at the BBB

We scored BKV Energy on public records only: state complaints, fines, its contract, its prices, its license and its BBB grade. No company can pay for its score.

Short answer

BKV Energy is a reliable Texas electricity company by the public record. It scores 82 out of 100 (Very good), second-best of the 25 Texas companies we’ve rated. The state gives it 5 of 5, its top complaint rating, and we found no state penalties. The catches: a C- at the BBB, a $20-a-month cancel fee and a costly rollover price.

BKV Energy at a glance82/100 · Very good
What we like
  • Rated 5 of 5 by the state for complaints
  • No state penalties found since its 2022 license
  • No arbitration clause, so you keep your right to sue in a Texas court
  • Flat Daisy prices with a $0 base charge and no bill credits
  • A bill-help fund that BKV, its staff and its customers pay into
What to watch
  • A C- at the BBB, and not accredited
  • $20 for every whole month left if you leave early
  • Rolls you onto a month-to-month price, 19.6¢ in Oncor’s area in October 2026
  • Its 30-day trial is only for BKV Energy Plus members
  • The standard plan is 29% renewable, below the state average on its own label

Best for homes that want one flat price, even in light months. Think twice if you won’t keep an eye on your renewal date, because in October 2026 the rollover price ran 39% to 51% higher.

Each one has a catch worth 2 minutes.

  1. Signing up? The 30-day trial isn’t on the Daisy plans listed on Power to Choose.
  2. Leaving? Switch within 14 days of your end date and it costs $0.

01 · The score

How does BKV Energy score?

  • October 15, 2026: 82 at launch.

BKV reaches five years licensed on October 18, 2027, worth 2 more points if nothing else changes. The EIA’s next Texas price average posts October 23, 2026, and BKV keeps full price points while its average stays at or below 14.37¢. A drop to 4 of 5 on the state’s next complaint scorecard would cost it 5 points.

02 · Two report cards

Why does the state rate BKV 5 of 5 when the BBB says C-?

They measure different things. The state’s rating compares complaints filed with the PUCT to the size of each company. The BBB’s letter grade comes from its own formula, and it carries just 5 of our 100 points.

PUCT complaint rating: 5 of 5September 2026 scorecard, March to August 2026

That’s the best of the state’s five groups. Only 7 complaints about BKV reached the PUCT in those six months. Power to Choose shows the same 5 on every BKV plan, in all six areas where it sells.

BBB grade: C-, not accreditedBBB Heart of Texas listing, Oct 15, 2026

The grade comes from the BBB’s search listing. Its profile page sat behind a robot check, so we couldn’t read the BBB’s reasons. In our formula, a C- earns 2 of 5 points, the same as no rating at all.

What about “Voted #1”? BKV’s Houston plans on Power to Choose say “Voted #1 Electricity Provider in Houston 2025!” BKV’s blog says that came from a Houston Chronicle readers’ poll, and that it was a top-3 finalist in 2026. A readers’ poll is not a state rating.

04 · Cancel

How do you cancel BKV Energy?

It depends on why you’re leaving. Leaving early costs $20 for each whole month left. That drops to $0 if you switch within 14 days of your end date, or if you move and show proof.

  1. 1
    Switching companies

Sign up with the new company. BKV says Texas switches go through ERCOT, the grid operator, so you don’t have to call BKV first.

  2. 2
    Moving out

Give BKV your forwarding address and proof of the move, like a new lease or closing papers. Its terms say you then won’t owe the cancel fee.

  3. 3
    Just stopping service

Send BKV’s cancellation form so it arrives 5 business days to 60 days before your stop date, or call 1-855-258-4797. The form warns your power will be shut off if no other company starts service.

05 · The rollover

What happens when your BKV contract ends?

If you don’t pick a new plan, BKV moves you to a month-to-month price it sets. In October 2026, BKV’s own published rollover price was 19.6¢ per kWh in Oncor’s area and 20.9¢ in CenterPoint’s. Daisy 12 cost 14.1¢ and 13.8¢.

BKV says it sends renewal reminders by email or text at 90, 60, 30, 15, 7 and 3 days before your end date, and that new and returning customers are offered the same rates. You can check that in 2 minutes: compare your renewal fact label with the Daisy price on Power to Choose the same day. That’s why Daisy 12 costs about the same per kWh at 500 and at 2,000 kWh: there’s no base charge and no bill credit, just one energy rate plus delivery. Many plans with low headline prices only reach them at 1,000 kWh or more, as our guide to bill-credit plans shows. 08 · Complaints

How many complaints does BKV Energy get?

Very few for its size. Texans filed 7 complaints about BKV with the PUCT from March through August 2026, the window behind its 5-of-5 rating. Across the state’s 2026 fiscal year, September 2025 to August 2026, there were 22.

09 · Regulatory record

Has BKV Energy been fined?

No. We searched the PUCT’s case files under every BKV name and found only licensing paperwork and that one dismissed complaint. None of the Texas Attorney General’s 2,300 news releases since January 2017 names BKV.

  1. BKV-BPP Retail applies to the PUCT for a license to sell electricity.
  2. The PUCT grants retail electric provider certificate 10323.
  3. BKV Energy launches in Texas.
  4. BKV Corp. reports over 58,000 BKV Energy customers.
  5. BKV Corp.’s share of the power joint venture rises from 50% to 75%.
  6. The only formal customer complaint is dismissed, with no finding and no penalty.
  7. BKV reaches five years licensed, worth 2 more points on our scorecard.

How we checked: we searched the PUCT’s case files by company name, case title and filing party, under all five names the PUCT lists for BKV. The Attorney General’s site search wasn’t working, so we read every news-release listing back to January 2017 instead. A settlement with no press release wouldn’t show up that way.

10 · Who owns it

Who owns BKV Energy, and what does BKV stand for?

BKV Energy is the retail arm of BKV Corp., a natural gas producer based in Denver, which Thailand’s Banpu mostly owns. The company doesn’t say what the letters stand for.

  4. 4
BKV-BPP Retail LLC, doing business as BKV EnergyPUCT certificate 10323 · over 58,000 customers

What does BKV stand for? BKV’s filings never spell it out. Its 2024 stock-offering prospectus says CEO Chris Kalnin and Banpu founded the company that came first, BKV O&G, in June 2015, and that Kalnin Ventures managed it. The popular guess, “Banpu Kalnin Ventures,” isn’t confirmed in any record we found.

BKV Energy’s own pages still call it “privately held.” The retail company itself isn’t traded, but its parent, BKV Corp., has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since its September 2024 stock offering. The retail arm owns no power plants or wires, its contract says. BKV Corp. told investors that all of its retail customers are on fixed prices, and that it relies on an energy supplier to hedge  its purchases.

One example shows why a fixed price protects you. When a new grid charge started in 2023, BKV Corp. said the PUCT kept retail companies like BKV from passing it on to existing fixed-price customers.

11 · Fees and contract

What fees does BKV Energy charge?

On Daisy 12, the fact label lists a 5% late fee, a $30 returned-payment fee, and $50 each to disconnect or reconnect for nonpayment. There’s no base charge and no minimum-usage fee.

About that 30-day trial. BKV’s 2023 launch page promised every new customer a 30-day trial. Its 2025 support pages say the “30-Day Power Pilot” is only for BKV Energy Plus members. If the trial matters to you, get it in writing before you sign.

Is BKV Energy green?

Partly. The standard Daisy 12 plan is 29% renewable, below the 37.2% statewide average printed on its own label. Daisy Green 12 is 100% renewable for about 0.2¢ more per kWh, or about $2 a month at 1,000 kWh.

“100% renewable” works through renewable energy certificates, BKV’s terms explain. They pay renewable generators, but the power at your meter comes off the same grid as everyone else’s. BKV’s blog says it hopes to offer carbon-neutral power “one day.” Its parent’s main business is producing natural gas.

14 · Questions

BKV Energy questions, answered

Short answers from state records, BKV’s own documents and its parent’s SEC filings.

Is BKV Energy reliable?

By the public record, yes. BKV scores 82 out of 100 on our scorecard, second-best of 25 Texas companies. The state rated it 5 of 5 for complaints from March to August 2026, and we found no state penalties. It does have a C- at the BBB and a $20-a-month cancel fee.

What does BKV Energy stand for?

The company doesn’t say. Its parent’s 2024 stock-offering prospectus traces the name to BKV O&G, which CEO Chris Kalnin and Thailand’s Banpu founded in June 2015. The common guess, Banpu Kalnin Ventures, isn’t confirmed in any filing we found.

Who owns BKV Energy?

BKV Energy is BKV-BPP Retail LLC, wholly owned by the BKV-BPP Power joint venture. BKV Corp., a Denver natural gas producer on the New York Stock Exchange, has owned 75% of that venture since Jan 30, 2026; Banpu Power US owns 25%. Banpu owns about 67.6% of BKV Corp.

How do I cancel BKV Energy?

To switch, just sign up with the new company. To move, give BKV your forwarding address and proof. To stop service, send BKV’s cancellation form 5 business days to 60 days ahead, or call 1-855-258-4797. Without a new company lined up, your power gets shut off.

How much does BKV Energy charge to cancel early?

$20 for each whole month left on your contract, so up to $240 on a 12-month Daisy plan. It costs $0 if your switch happens within 14 days of your end date, or if you move and give BKV a forwarding address.

Why does BKV Energy have a C- at the BBB?

The BBB’s listing for BKV Energy, under BBB Heart of Texas, showed a C- and no accreditation on Oct 15, 2026. Its profile page was behind a robot check, so we couldn’t read the reasons. In our formula, a C- earns 2 of 5 points, the same as no rating.

How many complaints does BKV Energy get?

Texans filed 7 complaints about BKV with the PUCT from March through August 2026, and 22 in the state’s fiscal year from September 2025 to August 2026. For its size, the state gives it 5 of 5, the best complaint rating.

What happens when my BKV Energy contract ends?

You move to a month-to-month price BKV sets each month. In October 2026, it was 19.6¢ per kWh in Oncor’s area and 20.9¢ in CenterPoint’s, at 1,000 kWh. You can leave that plan at any time without a fee, and BKV sends reminders before your end date.

Does BKV Energy have a 30-day trial?

Only for BKV Energy Plus members, BKV’s 2025 support pages say. That means its Bluebonnet plans, or a Daisy plan plus the $9.99 monthly add-on. The Daisy plans listed on Power to Choose don’t include it, even though a 2023 page promised it to everyone.

Does BKV Energy have a base charge or minimum-usage fee?

Not on Daisy 12. Its fact labels show a $0 base charge and no bill credits or minimum-usage fee, just one energy rate of 6.871¢ per kWh in Dallas or 6.902¢ in Houston, plus the utility’s delivery charge.

Is BKV Energy 100% renewable?

Not by default. Its standard Daisy 12 plan is 29% renewable, below the 37.2% statewide average printed on its label. Daisy Green 12 is 100% renewable for about 0.2¢ more per kWh. Those claims are backed by renewable energy certificates.

What is BKV Energy’s customer service number?

Call 1-855-258-4797, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central, or text 405-450-8747. Paying by phone works 24/7. For an outage, call your utility, such as Oncor or CenterPoint, not BKV.
