How does Gexa Energy score?
Gexa earns 74 out of 100. We rate that "good." It gets full marks for price and strong marks for complaints. It loses the most points for its contract, its C at the BBB and two state penalties.
- October 4, 2026: 72 at launch.
- October 5, 2026: 74. Gexa’s terms show customer donations fund an energy-assistance program, which earns the 2 bill-help points in our method.
- 2029 (scheduled): up 4 points when the 2019 penalty (Docket 49930) ages out of our 10-year window, if nothing else changes.
We re-check prices every month and re-score when the state posts new complaint data or a penalty order, or the BBB grade changes.

|---|---|---|
| Complaints to the state | 20 / 25 | 4 of 5 on the PUCT complaint scorecard, 2026. For context, 78 complaints were logged April 1 to September 30, 2026. |
| BBB rating | 2 / 5 | C letter grade on its BBB profile, checked October 4, 2026. Only the letter counts. |
| Fines and penalties | 12 / 20 | Two qualifying penalties in 10 years, both under $100,000 (−4 each): $35,000 in 2019 (Docket 49930) and $46,150 in 2023 (Docket 54928). A 2007 federal penalty is older than 10 years and wasn't a Texas action, so it doesn't count. No Texas Attorney General action found. |
| Contract fairness | 10 / 20 | $150 cancel fee on the 12-month plan (5 of 5); an arbitration clause and a class-action waiver (0 of 4); three extra fees beyond late and returned payment (1 of 4); a plain fixed plan (4 of 4); only the legal 3-day free-cancel window (0 of 3). |
| Price | 20 / 20 | Eco Choice 12 at 12.2¢ in Houston and about 12.4¢ in Dallas at Oncor's October 4 delivery rates (11.5¢ on its September 17 label). The 12.3¢ average is 78% of the 15.88¢ Texas average (EIA, July 2026): 20 − (78 − 90) ÷ 2 = 26, capped at 20. |
| Time in business | 10 / 10 | Licensed 20+ years (6): Gexa has served Texas under PUCT certificate No. 10027 since at least 2005, when NextEra's predecessor, FPL Energy, agreed to buy it. Its terms say customer contributions help fund its energy assistance program (+2). Parent NextEra Energy publishes audited financials (+2). |
Gexa Energy quick facts
How much would Gexa cost me each month?
Pick Houston or Dallas and slide to the kWh on your last bill. Eco Choice 12 has no monthly base charge, so you pay only for the power you use plus delivery. At 1,000 kWh in Houston, that's about $36 less than the Texas average.
$52.20 energy from Gexa + $70.23 CenterPoint delivery.
At this usage, paying the 15.88¢ Texas average instead would cost about $36.37 more a month, or $436.44 a year.

The math uses Gexa's Eco Choice 12 fact labels: a 5.22¢ energy rate in Houston and 5.11¢ in Dallas, plus CenterPoint's and Oncor's current delivery charges. Taxes are extra. Paying more than this now? See what counts as a good Texas rate, what CenterPoint charges, what Oncor charges, or price any plan with our plan cost calculator.
What does Gexa charge in 2026?
Its plain plan, Gexa Eco Choice 12, costs about 12.2¢ per kWh in Houston and about 12.4¢ in Dallas at 1,000 kWh, with delivery but before taxes. That's one of the lowest plain-plan prices of any company we've scored.
Each bar is the most basic 12-month plan a company sells in Houston, priced from its own fact label. The Texas average is EIA’s July 2026 figure for all utilities.
Houston from Gexa's fact label read October 2026. Dallas recalculated from its September 17, 2026 label (5.11¢ energy charge, which showed 11.5¢ at 1,000 kWh) with Oncor's October 4 delivery charges, which pass straight through. Prices include delivery but not taxes.
- CenterPoint delivery, passed through to you$70.23
- Gexa energy charge (5.22¢ per kWh)$52.20
Before taxes. More than half of this bill is delivery, which is the same on every Houston plan. Gexa's part is only $52.20.
Is Gexa Energy really 100% renewable?
Yes, through certificates. Gexa says it buys renewable energy certificates to match 100% of the power it sells. Its Eco Choice 12 fact label lists the plan as 100% renewable.
From each company's fact labels, October 2026.
Gexa buys certificates from renewable sources across North America, like wind, sun and water. Each one stands for power made from that source. Gexa buys enough to match all the power you use.
Your outlets get the same grid mix as the house next door, since no company can steer only clean power to one home. What Gexa buys are certificates, the paperwork that proves a matching amount of clean power went onto the grid.
How many complaints does Gexa Energy get?
From April through September 2026, the state logged 78 complaints about Gexa. Measured against its customer count, that earns Gexa a 4 of 5, one step below the top group.
Every provider is ranked on complaints per 1,000 customers and split into five equal tiers. TXU sits in the best tier, 5 of 5.
Per customer, Gexa draws fewer complaints than most rivals, and its rating tops Green Mountain’s 3 of 5.
A C is a middling grade. It earns Gexa 2 of 5 BBB points. Only the letter counts in our score, not reviews or accreditation.
What's in Gexa's contract, and what fees does it charge?
The biggest catch is in the fine print: Gexa's terms send disputes to private arbitration and waive your right to join a class action or have a jury trial. That costs it all 4 points on that rule.
- Moving? The cancel fee is waived with proof of the move.
- One energy rate with no base charge, credits or tiers.
- 100% renewable power on every plan.
- Arbitration, plus class-action and jury-trial waivers.
- Three extra fees tied to late payment and disconnection.
- No free-cancel window beyond the 3 days the law requires.
Changed your mind? If you switched to Gexa from another company, you can cancel within three federal business days of geting your terms, with no fee. Behind on a bill? See help paying your electric bill.
Has Gexa Energy been fined?
Yes, twice in the last 10 years, both under $100,000. In 2019 it paid $35,000 over how it showed energy charges on bills. In 2023 it paid $46,150 over disconnection requests during an extreme weather emergency.
NextEra's predecessor, FPL Energy, agreed to buy Gexa in 2005. Gexa is NextEra's Texas electricity seller.
- FPL Energy, now part of NextEra Energy, signs a deal to buy Gexa.
- A $500,000 federal penalty tied to its business in New England. It's older than 10 years and not a Texas action, so it doesn't count.
- $35,000 PUCT settlement (Docket 49930). From November 2016 to January 2019, Gexa's bills showed a shortened energy charge; about 96,000 customers got those bills. Counts: −4.
- $46,150 PUCT settlement (Docket 54928) over disconnection requests during an extreme weather emergency. The utilities didn't complete any of them. Counts: −4.
How we checked: we went through state case files naming Gexa and looked for any action by the Texas Attorney General, and found no lawsuit there. Gexa admitted nothing in either settlement; each counts under our rule for penalties under $100,000.
Gexa vs. Green Mountain: which 100% renewable company is better?
Gexa scores higher, 74 to 70, and its plain plan costs far less: 12.2¢ versus 15.1¢ in Houston. Green Mountain wins on the BBB and the contract, because it has no arbitration clause.
Raw complaint totals ignore company size, which is why the state’s rating matters more. Green Mountain numbers are from our Green Mountain review.

Does Gexa Energy buy back solar power?
Yes. Gexa Solar Buyback 12 and Battery Benefits 12 pay a flat 3¢ credit for each extra kWh you send back, roughly a third of their 8.8¢ Dallas energy charge.
Based on Gexa fact labels from October 4, 2026 (Dallas) and September 30, 2026 (Houston), plus its terms of service. The average prices on those labels assume 475 kWh a month flows back to the grid. Credit rates can change, so read the current label before you enroll.

- No cap. Extra credits roll to your next bill.
- Leftover credits can’t be cashed out, and they vanish if you switch away.
- To qualify, you need an eligible solar system, a signed interconnection agreement and a meter that counts both ways.
- These plans add a $9.95 monthly base charge and a $150 early-exit fee, plus $20 if you don’t keep a working email for paperless billing.
Gexa Energy questions, answered
Is Gexa Energy a good electricity provider?
Mostly yes, if price matters most. On our public-records scorecard, Gexa earns 74 of 100, a good score. It loses points for forced arbitration, a C at the BBB, two state penalties and three extra fees.
Is Gexa Energy really 100% renewable?
Yes, through certificates. Gexa says it buys renewable energy certificates from sources across North America to match 100% of the power it sells, and its Eco Choice 12 label lists the plan as 100% renewable. Physically, your home still gets the same grid power as your neighbors.
Who owns Gexa Energy?
NextEra Energy, one of the biggest energy companies in the U.S. and the parent of Florida Power & Light. Its predecessor, FPL Energy, agreed to buy Gexa in 2005.

$150 on its 12-month Eco Choice plan. Gexa waives it if you move and give a forwarding address. New customers who switched in also get three federal business days after receiving the terms to back out free.
Does Gexa's contract force arbitration?
