Built on public data from the Power to Choose export of Oct 15, 2026, the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) complaint scorecard and directories, each parent company’s SEC filings and PUCT reports, CenterPoint’s annual report and the U.S. Census Bureau. We name each document in the sources.

01 · Who sells

Who sells electricity in Houston?

You do the choosing. In Houston, a company you pick sells you power and sends your bill. Many Houstonians call it the “light company.” CenterPoint runs the poles and wires, and that part is the same whoever you pick.

That’s 46 names, since Octopus Energy is listed twice. They hold 38 state licenses between them, because some brands share one license.

67 serve CenterPoint’s areaCenterPoint’s 2025 annual report

CenterPoint counted 67 retail companies serving its 2.86 million customers at the end of 2025. Some sell only on their own sites or keep serving past customers.

The state lists 141 active retail electric providers in all of Texas. Only some sell to homes, and only the ones that post plans show up on Power to Choose. That’s why some well-known names aren’t in the list below. See who’s missing and why.

State rating: the PUCT complaint scorecard, September 2026 edition (complaints per 1,000 customers, March 1 to August 31, 2026), as shown on Power to Choose. Our score: our 100-point public-records review, where we’ve done one. A simple plan is fixed-rate for 12 months, with one energy rate and no bill credits, usage fees or time-of-day pricing. Prices are the Electricity Facts Label averages at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh, including CenterPoint delivery, before taxes. Your monthly cost is our estimate between those three points.

One more company sells here: Think Energy. We’re paid when people sign up for its plans through Think+, so under our rules it isn’t in this table, our picks or our scores. Its state complaint rating on Power to Choose was 2 of 5 on Oct 15, 2026, and it listed 3 plans for Houston.

Why isn’t my company listed?

Some companies are licensed to sell in Texas but posted no plans on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026. Among them: 4Change Energy and Ambit (both owned by Vistra), XOOM Energy and Stream (both NRG), Town Square Energy (Genie Energy), Tesla Electric, Shell Energy Solutions and Energywell. You can still buy from them on their own sites. Our reviews of 4Change Energy and Ambit Energy cover two of them.

03 · The ratings

What does the state’s complaint rating mean?

It’s the state’s own report card on complaints. The PUCT counts complaints per 1,000 customers over six months, then sorts companies into five groups of about the same size. Five circles means the fewest complaints.

PUCT complaint scorecard, September 2026 edition, as listed on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026. Bars start at zero.

  • It follows the license, not the brand. Cirro Energy and Discount Power share one NRG license, so both show 2 of 5.
  • Every complaint counts, whether or not the company was at fault, the PUCT says.
  • It changes. The September 2026 edition covers March 1 to August 31, 2026. The state posts a new one every few months.
  • New companies aren’t rated. Abundance Energy, SmartEnergy and Texans Choice Power weren’t on the scorecard yet.

04 · Who owns whom

Who owns Houston’s electric companies?

Fewer than you’d think. The 45 brands on Houston’s list hold 38 state licenses, and the companies’ own filings fold them into 28 or fewer owner groups. Four parents own 15 of the 45 brands.

Same owner, same price? Not always. Just Energy, Amigo and Tara list the same 12-month prices and the same $125 credit. But NRG’s Reliant and Discount Power are 1.4¢ apart on their simplest plans. And matching prices don’t prove a shared owner, so we only list owners from the companies’ own filings.

The two biggest families carry a lot of weight here. At the end of 2025, companies tied to NRG and Vistra owed 37% and 23% of the $279 million that retail companies owed CenterPoint, its annual report says. Most of these companies are also local: 25 of the 38 licenses list a Houston street address with the PUCT.

05 · Best picks

What is the best electric company in Houston?

It depends on what you want most. These picks come straight from the state’s ratings, the plans’ own fact labels and our public-records scores. No company paid for a spot.

Top rating, lowest simple priceSpark Energy

Rated 5 of 5. Its Choose 12 plan is 13.0¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh, the lowest simple plan from a 5-of-5 company.

The lowest price isn’t always the best deal. The cheapest simple plan in Houston on Oct 15, 2026 was True Power’s True Value 12 at 11.8¢, from a company the state rates 1 of 5. Spark’s 5-of-5 plan costs about $12 more a month at 1,000 kWh. That’s the price of fewer headaches, if the ratings hold.

06 · Before you sign

Before you sign up

Two dated facts before you pick. 147 of the 181 Houston-area plans on Power to Choose were for new customers only on Oct 15, 2026, so your current company may not offer you its newest prices. And CenterPoint’s delivery charge rose on Oct 1, 2026, to $4.90 a month plus 6.5333¢ per kWh. Every company passes it through.

09 · Before you sign

How do you check a Houston electric company before you sign?

Two minutes, five checks. Each one uses a public record or a document the company must give you.

  1. 1
    Look up its rating

Find it in the list above. A 1 or 2 means more complaints per customer than most.

  2. 2
    Read the fact label

Check the price at 500 and 2,000 kWh, not just 1,000. Bill-credit plans can double at low use.

  3. 3
    Find the cancel fee

It’s on the fact label. Some are a flat $150 to $300; others charge per month left.

  4. 4
    Check the license number

A door-to-door seller’s badge must show the company’s PUCT number and a toll-free phone, by state rule.

  5. 5
    Know your 3 days

When you switch, you can cancel within 3 federal business days of getting the terms, with no fee. Move-ins don’t get this.

Switching itself is free, and the state’s site says it happens within seven business days with no lapse in service. More on that: how to switch electricity providers.

10 · Questions

Houston electric company questions, answered

Straight answers, from state records and the companies’ own filings.

How many electric companies are there in Houston?

45 companies listed plans for Houston homes on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026, with 181 plans between them. CenterPoint says 67 retail companies served customers in its area at the end of 2025, because some sell only on their own sites.

What is the best electric company in Houston?

There’s no single best for every home. By the state’s complaint rating, nine companies earn 5 of 5. Among them, Spark Energy had the lowest simple 12-month plan on Oct 15, 2026, at 13.0¢ per kWh, and Champion has our highest score, 96 out of 100.

Which Houston electric company has the cheapest simple plan?

On Oct 15, 2026, True Power’s True Value 12 was the cheapest simple 12-month plan, at 11.8¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh. The state rates True Power 1 of 5 for complaints. Lower headline prices usually come from bill-credit plans that cost much more at low use.

What is the difference between CenterPoint and my light company?

CenterPoint owns the poles and wires, reads your meter and fixes outages for every home in its area. Your light company, the one you pick, buys the power, sets your price and sends your bill. Your bill includes CenterPoint’s delivery charge either way.

Which Houston electric companies have the same owner?

NRG owns Reliant, Green Mountain, Direct Energy, Cirro and Discount Power. Vistra owns TXU, TriEagle, Express and Veteran. NextEra owns Gexa, Frontier and Companion. IGS Energy owns Just Energy, Amigo and Tara. Constellation owns Champion through Calpine.

What does a 5-of-5 rating on Power to Choose mean?

It means the company is in the state’s lowest-complaint group. The PUCT ranks companies by complaints per 1,000 customers over six months and splits them into five equal groups. The September 2026 edition covers March 1 to August 31, 2026.

Why isn’t 4Change Energy listed for Houston?

4Change Energy, a Vistra brand, posted no plans on Power to Choose on Oct 15, 2026. It’s still licensed and sells on its own website. Ambit, XOOM, Stream, Tesla Electric and Energywell were also licensed but not listed.

Which Houston electric companies sell prepaid plans?

Only two listed prepaid plans for Houston on Oct 15, 2026: Payless Power and Pronto Power. The state rates both 1 of 5 for complaints. For your options without a deposit, see our guide to no-deposit and prepaid electricity.

Which Houston companies offer 100% renewable plans?

12 companies in our Houston list offered at least one 100% renewable plan on Oct 15, 2026, including Gexa, Green Mountain, Rhythm, Energy Texas, Octopus, Chariot, CleanSky, BKV, Infuse and Revolution. Rhythm, Energy Texas and Octopus had the cheapest simple green plans, at 12.2¢. Among companies rated 4 or 5, Gexa’s was cheapest, at 12.4¢.

Can I get my electricity documents in Spanish in Houston?

Yes. A Texas rule lets you choose English or Spanish for your fact label, terms, bills and customer service. 44 of the 45 Houston companies list Spanish documents on Power to Choose. About 36% of Harris County residents speak Spanish at home, the Census says.

How do I know if I can choose my electric company?

If your bill shows CenterPoint or TNMP as your utility, you can choose. If you’re served by Entergy Texas, a co-op like San Bernard or Sam Houston, or a city utility, you can’t. Use the ZIP check on this page, then confirm on your bill.

Does The Day Company get paid by these companies?

No company pays to be listed, rated or scored. When this page shows a plan finder run by a partner, the partner pays us if you sign up through it, and we label it. One company in Houston, Think Energy, is a paid partner through Think+, so we keep it out of our rankings.
