NRG, NRG Home, Reliant and Direct Energy
Searches for "NRG energy reviews" mix several brands, so here is the map. NRG Energy, Inc. is the parent. In Pennsylvania the license is held by Reliant Energy Northeast LLC, which sells under the name NRG Home. Our records show Direct Energy is owned by the same parent.
The brand this page scores. Licensed in Pennsylvania in 2010 for business customers; homes were added on May 19, 2011.
See Direct Energy in Pennsylvania and Reliant in Texas. Each is scored on its own records.
Each brand has its own license, its own plans and its own score, so a good or bad record for one does not carry over to another.

It works from our robot's latest copy of the state's list, so a new NRG Home plan can appear the day it is posted. It is supply cost only, not a bill, and it saves nothing you type. Cash back, where a plan has it, is not counted as a lower price.

Is NRG Home cheaper than your utility?
Not at the prices we saw. On the state's cards, NRG Home's 12-month plan sat above the reference prices to compare we score against.
| Area | NRG Home 12-month | Share of the reference price to compare |
|---|---|---|
| PPL | 14.6¢ | 111.6% |
| PECO | 13.5¢ | 114.8% |
On average the plan came to 113.2% of the reference, which earns 8 of 20 points for price. The plan is 25% renewable and the card says it adds 1% cash back after every 12 months, for new customers who enroll on the web. That is a small rebate next to a gap of 1.5¢ to 2¢ per kWh. At 1,000 kWh a month, every 1¢ of gap is about $10. Utilities reset the price to compare on Dec. 1, so look at today's number first.
What NRG Home's complaint record shows
We show these records as they stand, with their dates, and no more.
| Record | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Pennsylvania PUC, 2024 report | 120 complaints in total for NRG Home (77 where it was the primary supplier). Against 142,526 homes served, that is 8.42 per 10,000 homes. |
| BBB profile | "Not Rated" and not accredited. The page shows 0 complaints, but our records say the BBB hands complaints against this business to another BBB office, so that zero tells you nothing. |
| 2021 PUC order | A $175,000 civil penalty in a settlement over 168 enrollments in 2018 made without customer authorization at in-person sales events. |
The 2021 order describes those facts as allegations by the PUC's enforcement bureau, and it has no admission language. NRG Home reported the problem itself in August 2018. The order was entered March 25, 2021, and the penalty was paid April 1, 2021. Nothing in it concerns your plan today, but it is a reason to say no to a sales pitch at an event or a door, and to sign up on the web instead.
| Category | Points | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Complaints to the state | 20 / 25 | The PUC's 2024 report counted 120 complaints for NRG Home (77 as primary utility). Divided by 142,526 homes served (EIA-861, 2024), that is 8.42 per 10,000 homes. The 5-to-10 band earns 20 of 25 points. |
| BBB rating | 2 / 5 | The BBB shows no rating for this business, read October 16, 2026, and says another BBB handles complaints about it. We did not use the parent's A+, since it carries no NRG Home alias. With no rating, it gets 2 of 5 points. |
| Fines and penalties | 12 / 20 | One penalty in the last 10 years: $175,000 on March 25, 2021 (docket M-2020-3006647), which takes 8 points off the 20. It earns 12 of 20. |
| Contract fairness | 18 / 20 | There is no cancel fee (5 of 5), no extra fees (4 of 4) and a plain 12-month fixed plan (4 of 4). We could not read the contract, so arbitration is unchecked (2 of 4). The absence of a fee lets you leave at any point (3 of 3). |
| Price | 8 / 20 | The 12-month fixed plan was 111.6% of the reference price in PPL's area and 114.8% in PECO's, 113.2% on average, good for 8 of 20 points. |
| Time in business | 6 / 10 | Licensed October 18, 2010 (15 years) earns 4 of 6 points. We did not find a bill-help program (0 of 2); audited financials are published (2 of 2). |
What this score rests on
Every category is worked out from public records. Where a record does not exist, a fixed default number of points is given, and the label says so. A default is not a finding about the company.
- Complaints to the state 20 of 25 points Record foundThe state's 2024 complaint count and the federal count of homes served give a rate.
- BBB rating 2 of 5 points Default points, no recordNo BBB rating or profile, so 2 of 5 points were given by default.
- Fines and penalties 12 of 20 points Record foundPennsylvania penalties found in the sources searched.
- Contract fairness 18 of 20 points Partly default pointsThe contract could not be read, so arbitration got a default 2 of 4 points.
- Price 8 of 20 points Record foundA 12-month price was checked against the frozen price to compare.
- Time in business 6 of 10 points Record found
4 of this score's 66 points are default points, given because the information does not exist or could not be read. Four of six categories rest on a record we found or a search that found nothing.
This is one score built from six records, and price is one of them. It is not a measure of complaints or legal history alone. How the points are given
What NRG Home says about fees
NRG Home's own site says it charges no enrollment, monthly service or switching fees. The state's card for the 12-month plan lists no cancel fee and no monthly fee. We could not open the contract itself, because it needs a web session. Ask for it in writing and read it for the price clause and for any arbitration term.
NRG Home's new customers have 3 business days after the disclosure statement to cancel with no penalty. The statement also shows the price for the months after the term.
Before a fixed NRG Home term ends, Pennsylvania rules call for two letters: one 45 to 60 days ahead, then an options letter at least 30 days ahead. Check the new price against your utility's before it rolls.
How to cancel NRG Home
With no cancel fee on the state's card, leaving is simple, but time it so you do not pay twice.
- 1Line up what replaces it.
Pick a new plan or your utility's price before the NRG Home plan ends.
- 2Enroll in the replacement.
That enrollment ends NRG Home. With no cancel fee on the 12-month plan, you owe nothing for leaving.
- 3Hold on to the letters.
NRG Home's two end-of-term notices and your confirmation belong in one folder.
- 4Compare the last NRG Home bill.
It should end on the switch date. A later charge deserves a call to the company.
With no cancel fee on the 12-month card, leaving NRG Home early should not carry a charge. Your own contract has the final word.

Where to take a problem with NRG Home
- 1Reach NRG Home first.
Describe the problem, the plan and the date, and record who you spoke to. The PUC expects this step.
- 2Report a switch you never approved.
Tell your utility inside your first two billing periods, which blocks the supplier from billing that stretch.
- 3Go to the PUC next.
Use the informal complaint form at puc.pa.gov/complaints or phone 800.692.7380. The PUC's 2021 order on NRG Home enrollments shows it does act on such reports.
If NRG Home made you an offer, find its plan for your utility in the tool, then compare its price with your price to compare.
Compare plans in my ZIPA partner runs the plan finder. If you sign up, it may pay us a fee, and that never moves a rating or a score.
