What is the price to beat at each NJ utility?
Find your utility on your bill. This is the supply and transmission price, with sales tax, that you pay if you pick no supplier. A supplier offer is only cheap if it costs less than this over the term.
| Utility | Now | Winter | Summer (first block of use) | In effect since | Suppliers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSE&G | 19.79¢ | 19.79¢ | 19.55¢ | Oct 1, 2026 | 65 |
| JCP&L | 17.05¢ | 17.05¢ | 15.82¢ | Oct 1, 2026 | 67 |
| Atlantic City Electric | 18.16¢ | 18.16¢ | 17.12¢ | Oct 1, 2026 | 58 |
| Rockland Electric, Bergen | 18.43¢ | 18.43¢ | 12.46¢ | Oct 1, 2026 | 35 |
| Rockland Electric, Passaic and Sussex | 16.62¢ | 16.62¢ | 10.65¢ | Oct 1, 2026 | 35 |
Utilities charge different amounts, so one utility's lower number does not mean a cheaper bill. Delivery comes on top at every utility, and the BPU approves it. The summer price applies to the first block of use. Our rates guide has the block sizes and the delivery side.
Does an offer beat your utility? The free tool
Got an offer from a supplier? Ask for it in writing. Then enter its price, any fee, its length and its cancel fee here. The tool prices winter, summer and the full year, and compares them with your utility.
Fill in the offer and press "See my verdict". You get the cost of the offer next to the cost of your price to compare over the whole contract, a plain answer, and a warning if your price to compare is about to change.
Partner toolWe get paid if you sign up. You don’t pay more, and it never changes our scores.
This is an estimate of supply cost, not a bill. It uses your utility's seasonal prices as we last read them and warns you when the next change is due. It leaves out delivery. You can save a reminder or print the result. Nothing you type is stored.
New Jersey buys its supply at a yearly state auction. The next is scheduled to start February 8, 2027, with new prices from June 1, 2027. Those dates can move. A fixed offer does not change on that day, so it can go from a deal to a loss, or the other way.
How do you judge an offer when there is no price list?
Without a price list, you check each offer yourself. These five checks catch most bad deals.
- The price per kWh, or the formula that sets it, is in the written contract.
- It is fixed for the whole term.
- Every fee is listed, with the early termination penalty in dollars.
- The year total beats your utility's winter and summer prices.
- It is a variable price with no clear formula.
- Fees are not in writing.
- The seller would not send terms before you agreed.
State rules say a contract must give the price or the way it is set, how long it lasts, and a full list of other fees. If a seller will not do that, walk away.
Here is a made-up example. Your utility charges 15.0¢ in winter and 12.0¢ in summer. A seller offers 14.0¢ fixed for 12 months with a $5 monthly fee. You use 800 kWh a month.
| Season | Offer with fee, per month | Utility, per month | Offer minus utility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter month | $117 | $120 | $3 less |
| Summer month | $117 | $96 | $21 more |
| Over a year (8 winter months, 4 summer) | $1,404 | $1,344 | $60 more |
The offer looks cheaper in winter and loses in summer. A saving that exists in only one season may not exist over the year.
What can you not shop for cheaper?
You can shop supply and the supplier's fees. You cannot shop delivery, which your utility sets with BPU approval. A new supplier does not change who delivers your power or fixes an outage.
| Part of the bill | Who sets it | Does an offer change it? |
|---|---|---|
| Supply price per kWh | The supplier, or your utility's price to compare | Yes |
| Supplier fees | The supplier | Yes |
| Delivery and monthly customer charge | Your utility, approved by the BPU | No |
| Taxes | The government | No |
If your town buys power for all homes, that rate is your price to beat. You can opt out of such a program.
How do you find the cheapest in 5 steps?
Find your utility's price, get a few offers in writing, test them, read the contract and sign with a reminder set.
- 1Find your utility's price.
It is in the table above and on your bill.
- 2Pick your suppliers.
NJ Power Switch lists who may sell at your utility. Check each name.
- 3Get two or three offers in writing.
Ask for the price, fees and length.
- 4Test each in the tool.
Use your winter and summer kWh.
- 5Read the contract, then sign.
You have 7 calendar days from the confirmation notice to cancel. With no signed renewal, a contract moves to month to month at its current price, so save the end date.
For the method, read our guide to comparing offers. To check a company, see the NJ supplier guide.
Find your utility's price in the table, get an offer in writing, and test it in the tool before you sign.
Compare plans at my ZIPA partner runs the plan finder. If you sign up, it may pay us a fee, and that never moves a rating or a score.
Questions, answered
What is the cheapest electricity rate in New Jersey?
It depends on your utility and the season. The number to beat is your utility's price to compare, in the table above. We have no list of supplier prices, because the state site shows none.
Who has the cheapest electricity in NJ?
We cannot say. NJ Power Switch lists suppliers but not prices, so we do not name one. Get offers in writing and test each against your utility.
Is staying with my utility the cheapest choice?
Sometimes. Your utility's price is the benchmark. If no offer beats it over the term, staying is the cheapest choice. 94 of every 100 eligible homes still buy from their utility.
How do I find cheap electricity in NJ?
Look up your utility's price, get written offers from suppliers on the state's list, and test each over a full year with fees.
Is the lowest price per kWh the cheapest offer?
Not always. A monthly fee, a variable price or an early termination penalty can make a lower rate cost more.
Why does the benchmark change in summer?
Utilities price summer and winter differently. The BPU's Power Switch site says the price to compare generally changes on June 1 and Oct. 1.
How long do I have to cancel a new supplier contract?
You have 7 calendar days from the date of the confirmation notice. The contract is not binding until that period ends.
What happens if I do nothing when my deal ends?
With no signed renewal, state rules say the contract continues month to month under its current terms and pricing. Check what you pay then.
Which NJ utility has the cheapest price?
The table shows each utility's own price, but utilities also differ in delivery and in what homes use. Compare offers within your own utility, not across them.
