Short answer

NRG Home is the Ohio name of Reliant Energy Northeast LLC, a licensed electricity seller. It passes 3 of the 4 supplier checks we could make. It is licensed here, its plans carry no cancel fee, and its lowest price was at or below the price to compare in three of five utility areas. One check is on Watch, because the plan can renew to a variable price. We could not match a BBB profile to check.

The 4 things to know

  • NRG Home is a seller, not your utility. Your utility still delivers the power and sends the bill.
  • Several names point to one seller. NRG Home, NRG Business and NRG Retail Solutions are names the PUCO links to Reliant Energy Northeast LLC.
  • The chart lists a cash-back offer. It says 1% cash back each year, for new customers only. Our price check leaves it out.
  • The Reliant name is used elsewhere too. Check the legal name on your contract before you read any review.

Built on public data from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), its Energy Choice Ohio charts and its list of supplier enforcement actions, NRG Home's own Ohio terms of service, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Ohio Administrative Code.

01 · Supplier Check

Supplier Check: NRG Home in Ohio

NRG Home gets a checklist rather than a number. A score needs complaint counts, and Ohio does not release them seller by seller. So five rules are marked below, each with a link and a read date. How we check explains each rule.

Supplier CheckPassed 3 of 4 checks we could make · Watch 1 · 1 not published or not checked yet
  1. Pass
Licensed to sell to homes here

NRG Home has residential offers on the state's own chart in all six utility areas. Its Ohio terms name Reliant Energy Northeast LLC and give PUCO certificate number 11-401E(1).

  2. Not checked
    BBB record

We could not match a BBB profile to Reliant Energy Northeast LLC, the company that sells NRG Home in Ohio (searched Nov. 1, 2026).

  3. Watch
    Contract terms

No fees, and you may cancel by contacting NRG Home. But the plan can continue month to month at a variable price without your yes, and the terms limit disputes to arbitration or small claims court. We read the 24-month sample plan.

  4. Pass
Price against the price to compare

We set its lowest fixed offer against the price to compare in each of the five areas on the chart. Its lowest fixed offer is at or below the price to compare in 3 of 5 areas, up to 10% above it in 2 areas. Duke Energy Ohio is left out until its new price to compare posts.

  5. Pass
    State record, last 5 years

No state action found since Nov. 2021. The PUCO's list shows one older order: a $100,000 forfeiture on March 24, 2021, over marketing and enrollment practices. That is outside five years.

It passes the licence, price and state record checks, and its contract rates Watch. We could not match a BBB profile to this company.

A single number would hide the split between a clean licence and a state order. Each rule is set out in how we check Ohio and New Jersey suppliers.

02 · The company

Who is NRG Home?

The state's chart lists the seller as NRG Home. Its Ohio terms give the full legal name as Reliant Energy Northeast LLC, doing business as NRG Home. A PUCO release of March 2021 adds the names NRG Business and NRG Retail Solutions for the same company. A review of Reliant Energy from another state may not describe this company, so match the legal name first.

Check the name on your bill and your contract. If it says Reliant Energy Northeast or NRG Home, you are reading about the right company. Your utility's name is on the delivery line.

03 · Test a price

What would NRG Home cost my home?

Ask NRG Home for a price at your address, or take one from the chart. Put it in the tool with your use for a month. The tool sets it beside your utility's default price and shows the gap in dollars. NRG Home's cash back is not in the result, so subtract it yourself.

  1. 1
    Choose your utility.

Its name is printed on your bill.

  2. 2
    Enter the NRG Home rate.

Use cents per kWh, such as 10.8.

  3. 3
    Enter any monthly fee.

Use 0 if the quote has none.

  4. 4
    Enter a month of kWh.

Read it from the usage box on your bill.

Its name is at the top of your bill.
Example: 9.99. Seen as $0.0999? Type 9.99.
Type 0 if the offer has no monthly fee.
It is on your bill. Not sure? Leave 1,000.

Pick your utility and type the offer's price. The answer shows here.

How we got this: all-in price = offer price + monthly fee ÷ your kWh. Each year = (price to compare − all-in price) × your kWh × 12. We assume the offer price and your use stay the same. Prices as of October 24, 2026, from Energy Choice Ohio.

The result covers the supply part only. What you type stays in your browser.

04 · NRG Home rates

What does NRG Home charge in Ohio?

NRG Home lists two fixed plans in each area, one 6 months long and one 12 months long, with no cancel fee. The table shows its lowest price next to each utility's price to compare. Prices are cents per kWh, power only.

Prices refreshed Oct. 24, 2026

The 12-month plans cost more per kWh in every area. A short plan keeps the price low now, and it brings the end date round sooner.

05 · Plan end

What happens when an NRG Home plan ends?

The terms say NRG Home will send a written notice before the fixed period ends, with your renewal and pricing options. If you do not cancel, the service continues on the terms in the notice. A renewal to a fixed price will not be longer than your first term. A renewal to a variable price runs month to month, and NRG Home sets it by its own formula. The terms say it will not raise that price by more than 30% from the month before.

  1. Sign upNote the end date, the price and the term. Keep the welcome letter.
  2. Before the endWatch for the written notice. It states the new price.
  3. Weigh itSet the new price beside your utility's default in the tool above.
  4. ChooseShop for another plan, return to the default or let it continue.

Your own contract is what counts. Ask for it in writing before you agree.

When a plan ends, you can compare other sellers at your address before the new price starts.

06 · PUCO record

What does the state's record show?

The PUCO's list of supplier enforcement actions has one entry for NRG. On March 24, 2021 the PUCO approved a settlement under which Reliant Energy Northeast LLC paid a $100,000 civil forfeiture. The PUCO's release says its investigation alleged violations of rules on marketing, soliciting and billing, including enrolling new customers without their consent (case 20-1758-GE-UNC). That is more than five years before our read date. We found no later order.
