ADT Solar shut down. Does ADT still cover your system?

ADT promised 25 years of coverage, then left solar. If your system acts up, you need to know who still has to fix it, and how to push when ADT drags its feet. Here’s the plan.

Short answer

ADT left solar, but its promises didn’t vanish. ADT’s board approved leaving home solar on January 19, 2024. It was not a bankruptcy. ADT told CNET it would keep its 25-year workmanship warranty and 25-year power production guarantee. Equipment makers still cover their parts. Because ADT is still in business, you can hold it to that promise.

Hold ADT to its word

ADT is still in business, and it said its 25-year warranties stay in place.

  1. Send ADT a dated, written claim that quotes the 25-year promise.
  2. Attach photos and your power data, and ask for a reply in 30 days.
  3. No fix? File a complaint with your state attorney general.

01 · The timeline

What happened to ADT Solar?

ADT is a home security company. It also sold home solar under the ADT Solar name. Many owners first signed with Sunpro Solar, which became ADT Solar. Then ADT pulled out of solar.

  1. ADT closes most of its solar branches.
  2. ADT’s board approves leaving home solar for good.
  3. ADT tells CNET it will keep its solar warranties and power guarantee.
  4. Some owners report trouble reaching anyone for service, local news finds.

ADT is still in business, selling security systems. That’s the key fact for owners: unlike a bankrupt installer, ADT can still be asked to keep its word. If your installer went bankrupt instead, see what to do when a solar company goes under.

Anything else needs a licensed installer. Get its price in writing, and use our checklist for picking one.

  1. “ADT sent us”A caller says ADT hired them to service your system. Call ADT yourself before anyone climbs on your roof.
  2. A paid “warranty transfer”ADT said its 25-year warranties stay in place. You don’t need to buy a new plan to keep them.
  3. Signing away your claimRead any release before you sign it. Some end your right to make future warranty claims.

Check your inverter brand. It’s on the box near your meter or in your contract. If it says Enphase, ask Enphase for a certified installer near you. Any licensed installer can work on most other brands.
08 · Quick answers

ADT Solar questions, answered

Is ADT Solar still in business?

No. ADT’s board approved leaving home solar on January 19, 2024, and ADT Solar closed. But ADT itself is still in business, selling security systems. ADT told CNET it would keep its solar warranties, so owners can still ask ADT for help.

Did ADT Solar go bankrupt?

No. ADT Solar shut down, but it was not a bankruptcy. ADT chose to leave the home solar business and stayed open. That matters, because a company that still exists can still be held to the promises in your contract.

Does ADT still honor ADT Solar warranties?

ADT says it does. It told CNET its 25-year limited workmanship warranty and 25-year power production guarantee would stay in place. It also said maker warranties on panels, inverters, racking and mounts are unchanged. Put every claim in writing. Keep a copy of every request and reply.

What warranties did ADT Solar offer?

ADT Solar contracts included a 25-year limited workmanship warranty and a 25-year power production guarantee, according to ADT’s statement to CNET. Equipment makers also back their own parts, like panels and inverters. Check your contract for the exact terms. Keep your contract somewhere safe, since you’ll need it for any claim.

Who fixes my ADT solar panels now?

Start with a written claim to ADT for install problems. A failed part may fall under its maker’s warranty. If you hire a licensed installer, check their record first and get a written quote. Save every quote and receipt.

What if ADT won’t answer my warranty claim?

Send a dated letter or email that quotes ADT’s 25-year warranty promise, and set a reply date. Keep copies of everything. If ADT still doesn’t act, file a complaint with your state attorney general and include your records. Legal aid or a consumer lawyer can help if you’re stuck.

Is Sunpro Solar the same as ADT Solar?

Many owners first signed with Sunpro Solar, which later became ADT Solar. So if your contract says Sunpro, your system likely falls under ADT’s solar warranty promises. Check your paperwork for the company name and warranty terms. Keep that paperwork with your warranty and loan papers.

Do I still have to pay my ADT Solar loan?

Usually, yes. A lender holds your loan, and ADT leaving solar didn’t cancel it. Pay as usual, and bring questions to the lender. Check any new company that contacts you before you change where you pay. Late payments still count against your credit, even though ADT left solar.

What is the ADT power production guarantee?

It’s a promise that your system will make a certain amount of power. ADT said its 25-year power production guarantee would stay in place. If your output falls short, gather your power data and contract, then file a claim in writing.

Why did ADT leave the solar business?

ADT said its solar business faced problems, including operating trouble and a tough market. Its security business was doing well. So in January 2024, its board approved leaving home solar for good. ADT said it would keep its solar warranties after it left.

How do I file a complaint about ADT Solar?

First, send ADT a written claim and keep copies. If it doesn’t act, file a complaint with your state attorney general. You can find your attorney general through the National Association of Attorneys General. Include your contract, letters and photos.

Were there signs ADT Solar would close?

Yes. ADT closed most of its solar branches in the fall of 2023. A few months later, in January 2024, its board approved leaving home solar for good. Branch closings and layoffs are common early warning signs. If your installer starts closing offices, save your papers right away.

How long does ADT have to honor my solar warranty?

Up to 25 years, by ADT’s own account. ADT told CNET its 25-year limited workmanship warranty and 25-year power production guarantee stay in place. Count from the install date in your contract, and check it for the exact terms and any limits.

My roof leaks near my ADT panels. What do I do?

Take photos and protect the inside of your home first. Then send ADT a written claim under its workmanship warranty. Get a roofer’s written opinion on the cause. If ADT won’t respond, file a complaint with your state attorney general and keep copies of everything.
