The scale: what Direct Energy gives and what it costs
Picture a scale. On one side sits what Direct Energy gives (as scored Oct. 16, 2026): no fines, no cancel fee and a price close to your utility's. On the other sits what it costs: an F from the BBB and a contract we could not read. In Ohio the same brand is reviewed on our Ohio page, and in Texas on our Texas page.
No Pennsylvania fines found. No cancel fee, so you can leave at any time. 6.37 complaints per 10,000 homes. Licensed since 2005.
Its BBB grade was F when we scored it (Oct. 16, 2026).
Each bar is that part's points as a share of the most it can earn.
Try a Direct Energy offer in the tool
Choose your utility. Then key in the written price from Direct Energy, the term and any fee. The tool totals every month and sets that against your utility's price.
Fill in the offer and press "See my verdict". You get the cost of the offer next to the cost of your price to compare over the whole contract, a plain answer, and a warning if your price to compare is about to change.
Partner toolWe get paid if you sign up. You don’t pay more, and it never changes our scores.
What you get is a guess at supply cost, not a bill. The state card for the 12-month plan lists no monthly fee and no cancel fee, so leave those boxes empty unless your offer names one. Your utility's price to compare comes from our last read. The tool saves nothing you type.
Is Direct Energy cheaper than your utility?
Close, but not under. On the state's cards, Direct Energy's fixed plans in PPL's and PECO's areas sat above the price to compare on Oct. 16, 2026.
| Area | Direct Energy | Price to compare | Share of the price |
|---|---|---|---|
| PPL | 13.79¢ | 13.079¢ | 105.4% |
| PECO | 12.49¢ | 11.759¢ | 106.2% |
The cards say "new customers" and the plan is web-only. The state's own list also shows 6, 18 and 24-month plans. A shorter plan can be cheaper but ends sooner, so check the end date. At 1,000 kWh, every 1¢ of gap is worth about $10 a month. Utilities reset the price to compare on Dec. 1, so look at today's number first.
Can you trust Direct Energy in Pennsylvania?
Yes, it is licensed. The PUC's licensed-supplier list, read on Nov. 1, 2026, names DIRECT ENERGY SERVICES LLC under docket A-110164. Legit does not mean the record is spotless, as the BBB part shows.
| Category | Points | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Complaints to the state | 20 / 25 | The PUC's 2024 report counted 50 complaints under "Direct Energy." Divided by 78,432 homes served (EIA-861, 2024), that is 6.37 per 10,000 homes. The 5-to-10 band earns 20 of 25 points. |
| BBB rating | 0 / 5 | The BBB profile is for Direct Energy, LP in Houston, Texas: grade F, not accredited, read on October 16, 2026. So it gets 0 of 5 points. |
| Fines and penalties | 20 / 20 | No Pennsylvania penalty counted in the last 10 years. A judge set a $1,000 penalty in a gas complaint in 2023, but the Commission decided on Feb. 22, 2024 that none was justified. The full 20 of 20 points go to Direct Energy here. |
| Contract fairness | 18 / 20 | There is no cancel fee (5 of 5), no extra fees (4 of 4) and a plain fixed plan (4 of 4). We could not read the contract, so arbitration is unchecked (2 of 4). No cancel fee means you may leave at any time (3 of 3). |
| Price | 12 / 20 | The 12-month fixed plan was 13.79¢ in PPL's area and 12.49¢ in PECO's. We measure against fixed reference prices to compare of 13.079¢ and 11.759¢. Those are 105.4% and 106.2% of the reference, 105.8% on average, good for 12 of 20 points. |
| Time in business | 8 / 10 | Licensed since April 21, 2005 (21 years), which earns 6 of 6 points. We found no bill-help program, so that part gets 0 of 2, and audited financials add 2 of 2. |
What this score rests on
Every category is worked out from public records. Where a record does not exist, a fixed default number of points is given, and the label says so. A default is not a finding about the company.
- Complaints to the state 20 of 25 points Record foundThe state's 2024 complaint count and the federal count of homes served give a rate.
- BBB rating 0 of 5 points Record foundBBB grade.
- Fines and penalties 20 of 20 points Searched, none foundNo Pennsylvania penalty found in the sources searched. That is not proof there was none.
- Contract fairness 18 of 20 points Partly default pointsThe contract could not be read, so arbitration got a default 2 of 4 points.
- Price 12 of 20 points Record foundA 12-month price was checked against the frozen price to compare.
- Time in business 8 of 10 points Record found
2 of this score's 78 points are default points, given because the information does not exist or could not be read. Five of six categories rest on a record we found or a search that found nothing.
This is one score built from six records, and price is one of them. It is not a measure of complaints or legal history alone. How the points are given
What the F means and does not mean
The BBB's F is for Direct Energy, LP in Houston, not for Direct Energy Services, LLC, the company the PUC licenses in Pennsylvania. The BBB profile lists 99 complaints in the last three years and says the grade reflects a pattern of unresolved complaints. We use it because it is the closest public record, and we say so here. Read it as a warning to keep your paperwork.
Actions in other states
Regulators in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York took actions against Direct Energy units. The dates in our file are Apr. 17, 2025, Aug. 10, 2021, Jan. 5, 2026 and Apr. 16, 2026. We score Pennsylvania records only, so none counts in the score, and we did not re-read them for this page.
What Direct Energy says about fees
Direct Energy's Philadelphia page, read Nov. 1, 2026, says "There are no fees to enroll with us." The state's cards for the 12-month plan list no monthly fee and no cancel fee. We could not open Direct Energy's own contract, because its site blocked our reader. Ask for the contract and read it for the price clause and for any arbitration term.
Read the disclosure statement before you agree. Pennsylvania rules give you 3 business days after getting it to cancel, with no penalty.
When a fixed deal ends you should get two notices, the first 45 to 60 days ahead and an options notice at least 30 days ahead. Compare the new price with your utility's before you let it roll.
How to cancel Direct Energy
With no cancel fee, leaving is simple, but time it so you do not pay twice.
- 1Pick what comes next.
A new plan, or your utility's default.
- 2Start the new plan.
The new supplier, or your utility, handles the switch.
- 3File the paperwork.
Hold on to every date and every confirmation.
- 4Check your next bill.
Make sure Direct Energy no longer charges you.
Because the state's card shows no cancel fee, you can usually leave with no charge. Confirm it in your own contract.
Who owns Direct Energy?
Our October notes say Direct Energy Services, LLC is owned by NRG Energy, Inc. NRG's own filing with the SEC on Jan. 5, 2021 reports that it finished buying Direct Energy that day, as cited on our Ohio page. We did not re-read the filing today.
How Direct Energy ranks among PA suppliers
| Supplier | Score |
|---|---|

Every supplier we score is on our Pennsylvania supplier ranking. The method is on how we score.
Where to take a problem with Direct Energy
- 1Call or write Direct Energy first.
The PUC wants you to give the company a chance. Jot down the day and the name of the person who helped.
- 2Warn your utility about a switch you never approved.
File the dispute inside your first two billing periods. For that stretch the supplier cannot bill you, and moving back costs nothing.
- 3Send the PUC an informal complaint.
The online form lives at puc.pa.gov/complaints, and the phone line is 800.692.7380.
If Direct Energy made you an offer, test its price in the tool and ask for the contract in writing before you agree.
Compare plans in my ZIPA partner runs the plan finder. If you sign up, it may pay us a fee, and that never moves a rating or a score.
