AEP Energy is not AEP Ohio
The name causes mix-ups. AEP Energy sells electricity supply. It is a retail supplier that shares a parent, American Electric Power, with some utilities. It does not run the wires or answer when the power goes out in Pennsylvania. That is still your utility, such as PPL, PECO or Duquesne Light.
A retail supplier licensed in Pennsylvania. It sets the price per kWh you pay if you pick it.
It sends the power, the bill's delivery charge and the outage line. In Ohio, AEP Ohio is a utility of this kind.
If your bill already shows AEP Energy and you never signed up, see the steps below. Ask your utility to confirm who your supplier is.
Try AEP Energy's plans in the tool
Choose your utility. The tool lists every AEP Energy plan on the state's list for your area, from today's data, and sets each against your price to compare at your own use.
Pick your utility and press the button. You get every AEP Energy plan on the state list for your area, each one set against your price to compare at your use, with its fees.

Prices come from our robot's latest copy of the PA Power Switch list, fees included. It is supply cost only, not a bill, and it saves nothing you type. Some AEP Energy plans pay Reward Dollars; the tool does not count them as savings.

Is AEP Energy cheaper than your utility?
Close. On the state's cards, AEP Energy's 12-month fixed plan was about even with the reference prices to compare we score against: a little above in PPL's area, under in PECO's.
| Area | AEP Energy 12-month | Share of the reference price to compare |
|---|---|---|
| PPL | 13.19¢ | 100.8% |
| PECO | 11.15¢ | 94.8% |
On average the plan came to 97.8% of the reference, which earns 16 of 20 points for price. For a home using 1,000 kWh, each cent of price gap moves the bill about $10 a month. Some AEP Energy plans pay Reward Dollars for use in its reward store; the state's card says the offer is valid for new and existing customers. A reward is not a lower price, so weigh it apart. Because utilities reset the price to compare on Dec. 1, look at today's number.
What AEP Energy's complaint record shows
We show these records as they stand, with their dates, and no more.
| Record | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Pennsylvania PUC, 2024 report | 21 complaints counted for AEP Energy. Against 89,725 homes served, that is 2.34 per 10,000 homes. |
| BBB, last 3 years | 38 complaints on the profile for AEP Energy in Columbus, Ohio (all states), 15 of them in the last 12 months. |
| BBB complaint types | Billing issues 13, service or repair 11, customer service 4, order 3, product 3, sales and advertising 3, delivery 1. |
The BBB profile covers the whole company, not Pennsylvania alone, and a count does not say who was right. The most common type on the BBB list is billing, so check your first bill against the price you were quoted.
| Category | Points | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Complaints to the state | 25 / 25 | The PUC's 2024 report counted 21 complaints under "AEP Energy." Divided by 89,725 homes served (EIA-861, 2024), that is 2.34 per 10,000 homes. The under-5 band earns the full 25 of 25 points. |
| BBB rating | 5 / 5 | BBB grade A+, accredited since February 17, 2012, read October 16, 2026. That earns 5 of 5 points. |
| Fines and penalties | 20 / 20 | No Pennsylvania penalty counted in the last 10 years. The full 20 of 20 points go to AEP Energy here. |
| Contract fairness | 18 / 20 | There is no cancel fee (5 of 5), no extra fees (4 of 4) and a plain 12-month fixed plan (4 of 4). Its contract sits behind a login, so we could not read the arbitration terms (2 of 4). With no fee attached, leaving mid-term is open to you (3 of 3). |
| Price | 16 / 20 | The 12-month fixed plan was 100.8% of the reference price in PPL's area and 94.8% in PECO's, 97.8% on average, good for 16 of 20 points. |
| Time in business | 6 / 10 | Licensed November 9, 2009, first as BlueStar Energy Services and renamed AEP Energy in 2012 (16 years), earns 4 of 6 points. No bill-help program turned up (0 of 2), but audited financials earn the full 2 of 2. |
What this score rests on
Every category is worked out from public records. Where a record does not exist, a fixed default number of points is given, and the label says so. A default is not a finding about the company.
- Complaints to the state 25 of 25 points Record foundThe state's 2024 complaint count and the federal count of homes served give a rate.
- BBB rating 5 of 5 points Record foundBBB grade.
- Fines and penalties 20 of 20 points Searched, none foundNo Pennsylvania penalty found in the sources searched. That is not proof there was none.
- Contract fairness 18 of 20 points Partly default pointsThe contract could not be read, so arbitration got a default 2 of 4 points.
- Price 16 of 20 points Record foundA 12-month price was checked against the frozen price to compare.
- Time in business 6 of 10 points Record found
2 of this score's 90 points are default points, given because the information does not exist or could not be read. Five of six categories rest on a record we found or a search that found nothing.
This is one score built from six records, and price is one of them. It is not a measure of complaints or legal history alone. How the points are given
What AEP Energy says about fees
The state's card for the 12-month plan lists no cancel fee and no monthly fee. We could not open AEP Energy's contract, because its documents sit behind a login. So we cannot tell you what it says about arbitration, or about the price when the term ends. Ask for the contract and read it for both.
A new AEP Energy contract can be cancelled with no penalty during 3 business days after you receive its disclosure statement. Read it for the price after the term.
Pennsylvania requires AEP Energy to write twice before a fixed term ends: a first letter 45 to 60 days out and an options letter at least 30 days out. Set the new price beside your utility's before the plan renews.
How to cancel AEP Energy
With no cancel fee on the state's card, leaving is simple, but time it so you do not pay twice.
- 1Decide where you are going.
A new supplier or your utility's default price, chosen before the AEP Energy plan ends.
- 2Enroll in the new plan.
The switch itself ends your AEP Energy service. There is nothing to cancel by phone.
- 3Save the paperwork.
Keep AEP Energy's end-of-term letters and your new confirmation number together.
- 4Check the next statement.
Your bill should show the new supplier. Any AEP Energy charge after the switch date is worth a call.
The 12-month card lists no cancel fee, so moving to another plan should not cost AEP Energy customers a charge. Check your own contract first.
