Short answer

AEP Energy is a seller of electricity plans. It is not AEP Ohio, the utility that delivers your power and sends your bill. The two share a name, but you can use one without the other. AEP Energy passes all 5 of our supplier checks. Its lowest price beat the price to compare in four of five utility areas, and its plans on the chart have no cancel fee.

The 4 things to know

  • AEP Energy and AEP Ohio are two companies. Your utility, AEP Ohio, keeps the wires and the outage crews. See AEP Ohio's rates.
  • Your bill may carry both names. The utility's name is on the delivery part. The seller's name is on the supply part.
  • Its prices are mostly below the price to compare. Check the plan's end date and the price after it.
  • The state counts no complaints by seller. The BBB figure further down is the nearest record.

Built on public data from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) and its Energy Choice Ohio charts, AEP Energy's own Ohio page, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the Ohio Administrative Code.

01 · Supplier Check

Supplier Check: AEP Energy in Ohio

AEP Energy gets a checklist rather than a number. A score needs complaint counts, and Ohio does not release them seller by seller. So five rules are marked below, each with a link and a read date. How we check explains each rule.

    State record, last 5 years

No state action found since Nov. 2021. The PUCO's list of supplier enforcement actions has no entry for AEP Energy. We also searched PUCO news and the Ohio Attorney General by name. The rate cases and rulings that turned up were against AEP Ohio, the utility, so we did not count them.

It passes all five checks: licence, BBB, contract terms, price and state record. The state cases we found were about AEP Ohio, the utility, and not about this seller.

Without state complaint counts a score would be a guess. The rules for this checklist are in how we check Ohio and New Jersey suppliers.

02 · Two companies

Is AEP Energy the same as AEP Ohio?

No. AEP Ohio is the utility. It delivers power to your home, fixes outages and sends the bill. It stays your utility whichever seller you pick. AEP Energy is a seller. It only sets the price of the power you buy. AEP Energy's own site says it is an affiliate of AEP Ohio and is not its agent, and that you can stay with your utility.

If the lights go out, call your utility, not AEP Energy. If you want to know what price you pay for power, look at the supply line on your bill. The AEP Ohio guide shows the utility's own price to compare.

03 · Renewal dates

When does my AEP Energy plan end?

AEP Energy's Ohio page says renewal notices arrive 45 to 60 days before a contract ends. Ohio's rules set the notice window at 45 to 90 days for a fixed plan with no cancel fee that renews on its own. Type your end date and fee. The tool shows when each notice is due.

How we got this: the days come from the supplier rules in Ohio Administrative Code chapter 4901:1-21 (rules 11 and 20), counted back from your end date. Your contract and the notices you get come first.

It works out dates from Ohio's rules and does not read your contract. Your own contract and notices come first. Nothing you type is sent or saved.
