The 4 things to know

  • Your wires and your bill stay with the utility. SmartEnergy only changes who makes the supply charge on it: PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric or Rockland Electric keeps the poles and the outage line.
  • It sells 100% renewable plans. SmartEnergy says it matches your use with Renewable Energy Certificates. That does not change the wires that bring you power.
  • The BPU tallies complaints by supplier. Most of SmartEnergy's tally is about marketing. With no customer totals from the BPU, we put no company above another.
  • No state chart of offers exists in New Jersey. SmartEnergy shows its prices after you enter an address.

Built on public data from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), its supplier licence list and quarterly complaint reports, NJ Power Switch, SmartEnergy's own New Jersey terms, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

01 · Supplier Check

Supplier Check: SmartEnergy in New Jersey

There is no number on this page. We hold SmartEnergy to five written rules, and each row shows where we looked and when. The rules are in how we check.

  1. Pass
Licensed to sell to homes here

SmartEnergy Holdings, LLC holds electric licence ESL-0175 and is listed for residential customers in four utility areas.

    State record, last 5 years

We found no New Jersey action after Nov. 2021. We searched BPU orders and Attorney General releases for SmartEnergy by name. Other states are history only: Ohio fined it $122,000 on Aug. 23, 2023.

It passes the licence, BBB and state record checks. Its contract rates Watch because the cancel fee can pass $100 and the price turns variable. Its price stays unlisted because the state keeps no offer chart.

The state's data is too thin and too different from Pennsylvania's to support a rating, so the page lists what could be checked and what could not. The rules are in how we check Ohio and New Jersey suppliers.

How we got this: the fee is $10 for each month left, the amount in SmartEnergy’s New Jersey terms (version NJTOS250401). Staying costs (your price − the price to compare) × your kWh × the months left.

The $10 a month comes from SmartEnergy's New Jersey terms. Yours may differ, and a move can waive it. Only the supply price is counted, so treat the answer as a guide.

03 · State complaints

What did the BPU count about SmartEnergy?

Every quarter the BPU publishes how many calls and filings each outside supplier drew. It lists the company as Smart Energy. Here are the counts for the latest four reports, read Nov. 1, 2026. Each figure is a raw statewide count. Larger sellers tend to log more, and the BPU gives no customer totals to adjust for that.

Complaints the BPU counted about SmartEnergy
QuarterAll complaintsResidentialMain type
Q3 20251212Marketing 10, billing 2
Q4 20251212Marketing 11, billing 1
Q1 20263131Marketing 27, billing 4
Q2 20262726Marketing 23, billing 2
Total, four quarters8281

Each count is a customer calling the BPU, not a ruling on the company. For comparison, the same reports counted 18 for Constellation and 16 for Direct Energy, but company sizes differ and the BPU does not publish customer counts. Marketing was 71 of the 82 SmartEnergy complaints. The BPU does not say what the marketing complaints were about.

04 · BBB

What do customers say about SmartEnergy?

BBB is a private nonprofit, and it relays complaints without ruling on them. On Nov. 1, 2026 its SmartEnergy Holdings, LLC profile showed an A+ rating, accreditation since Sept. 16, 2020 and 101 complaints over 3 years. The profile covers every state SmartEnergy sells in, not only New Jersey. We use the headquarters profile, in New York. BBB also has a listing for SmartEnergy in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. We did not read the split of complaint types on either page.

06 · Price to compare

What is the price to beat?

SmartEnergy's offer is only good if it beats the default. Your utility's own default supply price is the yardstick. The prices below are in cents per kWh.

New Jersey price to compare by utility

PSE&G19.79¢October 1, 2026

Rockland Electric sets a separate price by county, in its own guide. To see how the PSE&G and JCP&L prices change, open their pages.

Another option, not the cheapest. To see other sellers against that price, compare plans at your address.

07 · Before you sign

What should I ask SmartEnergy before I sign?

  • Does the price hold for the full term, and how many months is that?
  • What is the early cancel fee at my term, at $10 a month left?
  • What price do I move to when the fixed term ends?
  • Is the licence number on my contract ESL-0175?
  • Never give your account number to someone who phoned you first.
  • Take nothing signed on your porch; a call to the seller tomorrow costs you nothing.

We found no New Jersey action since Nov. 2021. Ohio's commission ordered a $122,000 forfeiture on Aug. 23, 2023, case 23-601-EL-UNC, over misleading information to customers. That is another state, so it is history only on this page.
