The 4 things to know

  • Constellation is not your utility. PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric or Rockland Electric still delivers your power and sends the bill.
  • New Jersey has no state list of supplier prices. Prices show on the seller's site once you enter your address.
  • The BPU counts complaints each quarter. The raw counts are below. The BPU does not say how many customers each company has, so we do not rank them.
  • Always test a quote against your utility's price to compare.

Built on public data from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), its supplier licence list and quarterly complaint reports, NJ Power Switch, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

01 · Supplier Check

Supplier Check: Constellation in New Jersey

We do not score New Jersey suppliers. The BPU's complaint counts do not fit our Pennsylvania formula, so a score would not be fair. We run five checks instead and show the source and the day we read it. How we check explains each rule.

  1. Pass
Licensed to sell to homes here

Constellation NewEnergy, Inc. holds electric licence ESL-0273 (also doing business as New Jersey Gas & Electric) and is listed for residential customers in four utility areas.

  2. Pass

A+ and BBB accredited since May 14, 2013. BBB lists 35 complaints in the last 3 years. BBB has one profile for Constellation NewEnergy, Inc. and none for New Jersey alone.

  3. Not published
    Contract terms

The only contract summary we found is undated, covers one utility area and prints a licence number the BPU lists under another company, so we did not use it. Rate, term and cancel fee show on Constellation's site after you enter a service address.

  5. Pass
    State record, last 5 years

No New Jersey action found since Nov. 2021. We searched BPU orders and Attorney General releases for Constellation by name. The BPU counted 18 complaints about it in its latest four quarterly reports.

It passes the licence, BBB and state record checks. Contract terms and price are not published without a service address, since New Jersey has no offer chart.

New Jersey gets a checklist, not a score, because the BPU's counts do not match the inputs of our Pennsylvania formula. See how we check Ohio and New Jersey suppliers.

02 · Test a price

Does a Constellation quote beat my utility's price?

Get Constellation's price for your address. Enter it with the monthly fee, if any, and your use. Pick your utility. You get the gain or the extra cost for winter, for summer and across 12 months.

  1. 1
    Pick your utility.

    It is on your bill.

  2. 2
    Type the price.

Use cents per kWh, with tax.

  3. 3
    Add the monthly fee.

Leave 0 if the quote has none.

  4. 4
    Add your monthly use.

It is the kWh line on your bill.

Its name is at the top of your bill.
Example: 12.50. Seen as $0.1250? Type 12.50. Use the price with sales tax.
Type 0 if the offer has no monthly fee.
It is on your bill. Not sure? Leave 670, the state average.

Pick your utility and type the offer's price. The answer shows here.

Offer compared with your price to compare
Measure Oct. to May June to Sept. 12 months
Your price to compare–––
This offer, all in–––
Each month–––
Over those months–––

How we got this: all-in price = offer price + monthly fee ÷ your kWh. Prices as of October 31, 2026, from the utilities.

"Costs more" means the offer takes money from you, and "saves" means you keep it. The result covers the supply price only. It is not a bill, and it skips delivery, credits and the contract's fine print.

03 · State complaints

What did the BPU count about Constellation?

The BPU posts a report each quarter with the complaints it received about each third-party supplier. Here are Constellation's counts for the latest four reports, read Nov. 1, 2026. They are raw counts for all of New Jersey. The BPU does not give each company's customer count, so a bigger company will usually have more.

Complaints the BPU counted about Constellation Energy
QuarterAll complaintsResidentialMain type
Q3 202510Marketing (commercial)
Q4 202522Marketing
Q1 20261210Billing 7, marketing 3
Q2 202633Marketing 2, billing 1
Total, four quarters1815

A complaint is a customer's report to the BPU, not a finding against the company. Q1 2026 was the high point. The BPU report does not say why.

04 · BBB

What do customers say about Constellation?

BBB is a private group, and it does not judge each complaint. On Nov. 1, 2026 it listed 35 complaints about Constellation NewEnergy, Inc. over 3 years, 6 of them in the last 12 months. By type: 18 billing, 9 customer service, 4 service or repair, 2 order and 2 sales or advertising. BBB marked 8 as resolved and 27 as answered. The profile covers all the states Constellation sells in, not only New Jersey.

05 · Price to compare

What is the price to beat?

Constellation's offer is only good if it beats the default. Each utility posts a price to compare. These are the supply prices in cents per kWh.

New Jersey price to compare by utility

PSE&G19.79¢October 1, 2026
JCP&L17.05¢October 1, 2026

Rockland Electric has its own price. See the Rockland Electric guide. Our PSE&G and JCP&L guides show how those prices move.

06 · Before you sign

What should I ask Constellation before I sign?

  • Is the price fixed for the whole term, and for how many months?
  • What is the early cancel fee, and is there a free window?
  • What happens when the term ends: a new fixed price, or a variable one?
  • Is the licence number on the contract ESL-0273?
  • Do not read your account number to a caller you did not phone.
  • Do not sign at the door. You can always call back.

The BPU's customer line is 1-800-624-0241. Our supplier guide shows how to check a name.
