Short answer

Green Mountain Energy is licensed to sell electricity to homes in New Jersey, and it passes 2 of the 3 supplier checks we could make. It holds BPU licence ESL-0233 and has an A+ BBB rating but is not BBB accredited. The BPU's last four quarterly complaint reports do not name it. We could not open its New Jersey contract, and New Jersey has no state price list, so those two checks are not published.

The 4 things to know

  • Your wires and your bill stay with the utility. Green Mountain only changes who makes the supply charge on it: PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric or Rockland Electric keeps the poles and the outage line.
  • It sells renewable plans. That is a sales claim about where the energy is matched, not a change to the wires.
  • It is a newer New Jersey seller. The Board issued its licence at its July 10, 2019 meeting.
  • Prices sit behind an address search. Trenton keeps no chart of offers, and Green Mountain quotes only once it has your address.

Built on public data from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), its supplier licence list and quarterly complaint reports, NJ Power Switch, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Supplier Check: Green Mountain in New Jersey

Green Mountain gets marks, not a rating. Five written rules set each one, and every row says where we looked and on what day. Read the rules under how we check.

    Contract terms

Price against the price to compare

New Jersey has no state offer list, and Green Mountain shows prices only after you enter an address. So no Green Mountain rate is printed here. The tool below takes a rate you were quoted.

    State record, last 5 years

We found no New Jersey action after Nov. 2021. We searched BPU orders and Attorney General releases for Green Mountain by name. Other states are history only: Pennsylvania, $156,000 in Feb. 2022, and a New York settlement in Apr. 2026.

Licence and state record pass. BBB rates Watch because the company is not accredited. The contract and the price could not be read, so they sit outside the count.

What New Jersey publishes cannot feed the Pennsylvania formula. So we show each check that could be made and name the ones that could not. Details sit in how we check Ohio and New Jersey suppliers.

02 · Test a plan

What does a Green Mountain plan cost over its term?

Ask Green Mountain for three things in writing: the price, the plan length and the price the plan moves to after. Enter them with your use. You get the cost of the term against your utility's price to compare, and the cost of one month after it, which is when many plans get dearer.

  1. 1
    Pick your utility.

Its name is on your bill.

  2. 2
    Type the price.

Cents per kWh, with sales tax in it.

  3. 3
Add the monthly fee and the length.

Leave the fee at 0 if there is none.

  4. 4
Add the price after the term, if you have it.

Leave it blank if you will switch first.

Printed on the first page of your bill.
Example: 12.50. Include sales tax.
Leave 0 when the plan has no monthly fee.
Example: 12. It is on the contract summary.
Ask Green Mountain what it moves to. Leave blank if you will switch before then.
Check a recent bill. With no bill to hand, 670 is a fair guess.

Type the Green Mountain price and the plan length. The cost against your price to compare shows here.

Your price to compare––
Green Mountain, all in––

How we got this: all-in price = plan price + monthly fee ÷ your kWh. The cost each month = (all-in price − price to compare) × your kWh.

When a plan "costs more", money leaves your pocket; when it "saves", you keep it. Supply charges only: delivery, credits and contract fine print are left out, so this is no bill.

03 · State complaints

What did the BPU count about Green Mountain?

Each quarter the BPU lists the suppliers that drew complaints, with counts by month. We read the reports for Q3 2025, Q4 2025, Q1 2026 and Q2 2026 on Nov. 1, 2026. Green Mountain Energy does not appear in any of the four, so the BPU named no complaints about it.

Complaints the BPU named about Green Mountain Energy
QuarterComplaints named
Q3 20250
Q4 20250
Q1 20260
Q2 20260

That is not proof of a spotless record. A company's absence from a report can also reflect a small number of customers, and the BPU does not give customer counts. A complaint is a customer's report to the BPU, not a finding against the company.

04 · BBB

What do customers say about Green Mountain?

The Better Business Bureau is a private body that passes complaints on and does not decide them. On Nov. 1, 2026 its headquarters profile, for Green Mountain Energy in Austin, Texas, showed an A+ rating, no BBB accreditation, 87 complaints over 3 years and 19 customer reviews. BBB also has a listing for Green Mountain Energy Company in New York. The profile covers more than New Jersey, and we did not read the split of complaint types.

05 · Price to compare

What is the price to beat?

Green Mountain's offer is only good if it beats the default. The default supply price at your utility is the number to beat. Cents per kWh, below.

New Jersey price to compare by utility
UtilityPrice to compareIn effect since
PSE&G19.79¢October 1, 2026
JCP&L17.05¢October 1, 2026
Atlantic City Electric18.16¢October 1, 2026

Rockland Electric sets a separate price by county, in its own guide. The PSE&G and JCP&L pages follow how those two move.

Another option, not the cheapest. To see other sellers against that price, compare plans at your address.

06 · Before you sign

What should I ask Green Mountain before I sign?

  • Does the price hold for the full term, and how many months is that?
  • What is the early cancel fee, if any, for my term?
  • What price do I move to when the term ends?
  • Is the licence number on the contract ESL-0233?
  • Do not hand an account number to a cold caller.
  • Do not sign on the doorstep; ring the seller back later instead.

To confirm a seller, call the BPU on 1-800-624-0241 or follow the steps in our supplier guide.

07 · Quick answers

Questions, answered

Is Green Mountain Energy legit in New Jersey?

It holds BPU licence ESL-0233 and is listed for homes on the BPU's active list. It has an A+ BBB rating, and the BPU's last four quarterly reports name no complaints about it. A licence is not a service rating. The BPU on 1-800-624-0241 can confirm who is licensed.

Is Green Mountain Energy my utility?

No. The utility keeps the lines, the outage crews and the bill. Green Mountain supplies the electricity on it.

Does Green Mountain Energy charge a cancellation fee in New Jersey?

We could not open a current New Jersey contract to read the fee, and other sites disagree. Ask for the fee and the free window in writing before you agree.

How do I cancel Green Mountain Energy in New Jersey?

We could not read its New Jersey contract, so ask for the fee and the free window in writing first. Then pick your next plan or your utility's default.

What happens when my Green Mountain plan ends?

Ask. Many plans move to a different price after the term. Use the free tool with the price Green Mountain gives you for after the term.

How many complaints has the BPU counted about Green Mountain?

None are named in the four quarterly reports we read on Nov. 1, 2026. With no customer totals from the BPU, that says nothing about a rate.

Is Green Mountain Energy BBB accredited?

No. The headquarters profile, in Austin, Texas, shows A+ and says the business is not BBB accredited. BBB also has a listing for Green Mountain Energy Company in New York.

Has Green Mountain been fined?

Our search found nothing in New Jersey after Nov. 2021. Pennsylvania's commission approved a $156,000 penalty in Feb. 2022 over unauthorized switches, and New York approved a settlement in Apr. 2026 with Green Mountain and eight affiliates. Those are other states, so they are history only on this page.

Is Green Mountain cheaper than my utility?

Only the quote in your hands settles it. Set it with your utility's price to compare, over the whole term, and read what happens when the term ends.

What are Green Mountain Energy's rates in New Jersey?

It posts no public price list. Trenton keeps no chart of offers, and Green Mountain quotes only once it has your address. Hold the quote against your utility's price to compare in the table above.

Is Green Mountain Energy a good company?

It passes 2 of the 3 checks we could make. It holds BPU licence ESL-0233 and an A+ BBB grade, and the BPU's last four quarterly reports name no complaints. We could not read its contract or compare a price.

Why is there no number for Green Mountain?

The Pennsylvania formula needs data New Jersey does not publish, so five separate marks stand in. The rules are open to read.

Which company has the cheapest electricity in NJ?

The answer shifts with your address and the month, and there is no state offer chart to settle it. Ask for written quotes and weigh them against the default, as laid out in our cheapest electricity in NJ guide.
