Does a home battery pay for itself in Illinois in 2026?

Sometimes — and never on a schedule anyone can honestly promise you. Four things move the math here: the $300 per kilowatt-hour utility rebate, the value of using your own stored power instead of exporting it under supply-only billing, virtual-power-plant payments starting by March 2027, and the installed price. We publish no payback period, because the one number that would anchor it isn't publicly verifiable.

That last point deserves plain language. There is no trustworthy public benchmark for what a residential battery costs installed. The national lab that models storage costs publishes utility-scale figures and a modeled residential system, not a homeowner price you could hold a quote against. So the honest method is the same one we recommend for vetting any solar quote: get the battery priced as its own line item, in dollars per kilowatt-hour of usable capacity, and compare quotes against each other rather than against an average nobody can source.

How does supply-only net billing change the battery math?

It's the single biggest reason storage math improved in Illinois. For systems interconnected on or after January 1, 2025, exports credit the supply side of your bill rather than full retail. So a kilowatt-hour you store and use yourself avoids the entire cost of buying that kilowatt-hour back — supply, transmission and delivery — while the same kilowatt-hour exported earns only the supply-side credit.

Illustrative, ComEd, summer 2026. Drawing a kilowatt-hour from the grid costs the 10.399¢ Price to Compare, plus 6.228¢ in distribution facilities charges and 0.126¢ in the Illinois electricity distribution tax — about 16.75¢ all in. Exporting that same kilowatt-hour earns the supply side, roughly 8.7¢ to 10.4¢. The gap of roughly 6.4 to 8 cents is what a battery captures every time it shifts a kilowatt-hour from export to your own evening use.

Declared assumptions: single-family, non-electric-heat delivery class, with delivery charges taken from ComEd's Summary of Typical Residential Line Item Charges (effective with the January 2026 billing period); supply rate effective June 1 – September 30, 2026 (it resets October 1, 2026); excludes fixed monthly charges and the monthly purchased-electricity adjustment. Two honest caveats. That gap is real but small per kilowatt-hour, so the annual value depends entirely on how many kilowatt-hours your battery actually shifts — which depends on system size, usage pattern, and season. And the gap moves whenever rates move: supply resets in October, delivery each January. It is a reason the math got better, not a reason it clears any particular bar.

What does the ComEd battery rebate pay — and what does taking it commit you to?

$300 per kilowatt-hour of storage capacity — and three commitments most sales pitches skip. The battery must be paired with solar; standalone storage doesn't qualify. You must take supply under ComEd's hourly pricing rate for the life of the battery. And you must join ComEd's scheduled-dispatch virtual power plant for a five-year term. That's the trade: money now, obligations later.

None of that makes the rebate a bad deal. It makes it a decision rather than free money, and it's worth understanding before you sign rather than after. One nuance worth carrying into a sales conversation: taking the storage rebate does not cost a pre-2025 system its legacy net metering — that's the generation rebate. Can a battery earn money in ComEd's 2027 virtual power plant?

Yes, with a floor and a lot still unpublished. Illinois law sets a minimum of $10 per kilowatt of average dispatch per Season, and the final rate could be higher — it hasn't been published. Service begins no later than March 1, 2027. Dispatch runs 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays from June through September, and the commitment runs five consecutive Seasons.

What isn't settled yet — and shouldn't be presented to you as if it were:

  • The final payment rate above the $10/kW-Season floor
  • The enrollment date and process — service opens by March 1, 2027, but the sign-up mechanics aren't published
  • Any program capacity cap
  • Exit terms — including what happens if you sell the house mid-term

Why is a utility paying homeowners for two hours of summer capacity at all? Because regional capacity prices have cleared at the federal cap three years running — the same pressure driving the October 2026 supply reset. Dispatchable storage is cheaper than the alternative. That's the honest reason the program exists, and it's also why the timing matters: the program opens by March 2027, and a system installed now is positioned for it.

Is the Ameren side different?

Same headline number, different plumbing. Ameren Illinois also pays $300 per kilowatt-hour for storage, also requires the battery be paired with an on-site renewable generator, and also ties the rebate to a program obligation — Ameren's own scheduled-dispatch virtual power plant was approved in June 2026. One genuine difference in Ameren's favor: exports there credit supply and transmission.

Ameren's required-rate and dispatch-election rules are in transition as the new dispatch program takes effect, so treat any specific requirement a salesperson quotes as something to verify in writing. Is a battery worth it just for backup?

For some households, that alone settles it. Solar without storage shuts down during an outage — grid-tied inverters disconnect to protect line crews, so a sunny blackout still leaves your panels idle and your house dark. A battery is the only way to keep essentials running. How long it lasts depends on the battery's size and what you choose to power.

The households where backup decides it are usually the ones with something that can't go dark: medical equipment, a well pump, a sump pump in a finished basement, a home office that pays the mortgage, a freezer that would cost hundreds to restock. If you're in that group, the payback conversation is almost beside the point — you're buying a capability, the way you'd buy a generator, and the rebate and VPP payments are a discount on it rather than a return on it.

Two practical notes. Backup requires a specific configuration — a battery that's wired to keep a critical-loads panel alive when the grid drops — so confirm it's in the quote rather than assumed. And ask what runs and for how long, in appliances rather than kilowatt-hours: "the fridge, the furnace fan and the internet, overnight" is an answer you can check against reality.

Do I even need a battery to go solar?

No. Solar works fine without storage in Illinois, and plenty of well-designed installations don't include one. A battery is a separate decision about resilience and rate arbitrage — not a requirement for panels, not a condition of any program, and not something your system needs in order to qualify for Illinois Shines or to connect to the grid.

Worth saying plainly, because "your system won't work without a battery" and "you have to add storage to qualify" are both claims that show up in sales conversations and neither is true. If you hear one, that's a signal to slow the conversation down, not to speed it up.

If you're undecided, "battery-ready" is a legitimate middle path: size and wire the solar installation so storage can be added later without redoing the work. You'd give up today's rebate on the storage portion and take on whatever the terms look like when you add it — but you keep the option, and you don't pay for a capability you haven't decided you want. The bill you'd have after solar alone is often the number that settles this question.

What should I ask before adding a battery to a solar quote?

Eight questions, each tied to a verified requirement or a document you can be shown. The answers matter less than whether they come in writing — a company that handles this list calmly is telling you something, and so is one that gets vague around the commitments.

  • Is this battery priced as its own line item, in dollars per usable kilowatt-hour?
  • If I take the $300/kWh rebate, am I agreeing to five years of VPP dispatch and hourly pricing for the life of the battery? (The answer is yes — see whether they say so first.)
  • What does hourly pricing do to the rest of my bill, and what happens in a high-price summer?
  • What's the VPP payment based on, and has the final rate been published yet? (It hasn't.)
  • What happens to the commitment if I sell the house before the five Seasons are up — in writing?
  • Will this configuration actually power my home in an outage, and which circuits, for how long?
  • What's the warranty's year term and its cycle or throughput cap? Both matter; one without the other tells you little.
  • Does your savings math assume a federal tax credit? For a 2026 install, that credit is gone.
