A new price to compare starts on December 1, 2026 in several utility areas. Spark's fixed price stays put, so if the utility's price drops, a small Spark saving can vanish.

01 · Who it sells to

Is Spark selling to homes in Pennsylvania?

Yes. On Oct. 24, 2026 the state's PA Power Switch list showed Spark Energy, LLC plans in every Pennsylvania utility area we keep except UGI. Spark's own Pennsylvania page speaks to businesses, but the plan terms on the state's list are for homes. Spark is part of Via Renewables, which also owns Verde Energy and Major Energy.

The catch is in the plan text. The plans are "valid for new residential and new small commercial enrollments only." They are not open to active Spark customers, or to former customers from the past 2 years. If you left Spark last year, you will not see the cheap plans on the list.

What Spark givesFees, penalties and ownership

No exit fee and no monthly fee on its 12-month plan. No Pennsylvania penalty of its own. Owned by Via Renewables, with audited accounts.

What it costsBBB: 2 of 5 points

A C+ at the BBB with 49 complaints in 3 years. Arbitration and a class-action waiver. No count of Pennsylvania homes to work out a rate.

The tool reads the state's plan list, as our robot keeps it, and shows each Spark plan for your utility: its length, its price and its fees. It sets each one next to your utility's price to compare at your own kWh, over the plan's whole term. Got a quote on paper or at the door? Type it in the same tool.

The answer covers supply price only, not your bill. Spark's list changes, and so do utility prices on their posted dates. We keep nothing you enter.

03 · Price check

Will Spark lower your bill?

On the plan we scored, it came out a little under the price to compare. The state's list showed Spark's Choice 12 plan, a 12-month fixed price with no fees, at these prices.

Spark's 12-month fixed plan against the price to compare, PPL and PECO areas (all Oct. 2026)
PricePPL areaPECO area
Spark Choice 12, PA Power Switch card12.95¢ (Oct. 15)11.39¢ (Oct. 13)
Price to compare13.079¢11.759¢
Spark as a share of the price to compare99.0%96.9%
Exit fee$0$0

That is about 0.1¢ a kWh under in PPL's area and 0.4¢ in PECO's. At 1,000 kWh a month, each 1¢ of gap is about $10, so the saving is small: roughly $1 and $4 a month. A fixed price pays off only if the price to compare later rises above it. Right now the utilities charge 13.079¢ (PPL) and 11.759¢ (PECO). The price to compare page lists every utility.

The state's list also shows shorter Spark plans of 4 and 6 months. A short plan ends sooner, and then the price can change. Ask what happens at the end before you sign.

04 · Trust

Can you trust Spark in Pennsylvania?

It is licensed. The PUC's record for Spark Energy, LLC is docket A-2009-2145787, and the company was first licensed on Jan. 28, 2010 (read Oct. 16, 2026). A license does not make a price fair. Spark's score has six parts. Below, each one is tied to the record we read.

Spark Energy score evidence, as of October 16, 2026
CategoryPointsEvidence
Complaints to the state15 / 25The PUC's 2024 report counted 8 complaints about Spark Energy. The federal table has no count of Spark's Pennsylvania homes, so we cannot work out a rate. With no rate, the method gives 15 of 25 points.
BBB rating2 / 5C+, not BBB accredited, read on October 16, 2026. The profile is for Spark Energy, L.P. That earns 2 of 5 points.
Fines and penalties20 / 20No Pennsylvania penalty found in the last 10 years. That earns 20 of 20 points.
Contract fairness16 / 20The exit fee is $0 (5 of 5) and there are no extra fees (4 of 4). The contract has binding arbitration and a class-action waiver (0 of 4); a written opt-out exists but we did not credit it. A plain 12-month fixed plan earns 4 of 4. No exit fee means you can leave at any time (3 of 3).
Price16 / 20The Choice 12 plan was 12.95¢ in PPL's area and 11.39¢ in PECO's on PA Power Switch. Our score uses the October reference prices to compare, 13.079¢ and 11.759¢. That puts Spark at 99.0% and 96.9%, an average of 97.9%, which earns 16 of 20 points.
Time in business6 / 10Licensed January 28, 2010 (16 years), which earns 4 of 6 points. We found no Spark bill-help program (0 of 2), and its parent's audited accounts earn 2 of 2.

What this score rests on

Every category is worked out from public records. Where a record does not exist, a fixed default number of points is given, and the label says so. A default is not a finding about the company.

  • Complaints to the state 15 of 25 points Default points, no recordThe customer count is missing or too small to turn the state complaint count into a rate, so 15 of 25 points were given by default.
  • BBB rating 2 of 5 points Record foundBBB grade.
  • Fines and penalties 20 of 20 points Searched, none foundNo Pennsylvania penalty found in the sources searched. That is not proof there was none.
  • Contract fairness 16 of 20 points Record foundThe supplier contract was read.
  • Price 16 of 20 points Record foundA 12-month price was checked against the frozen price to compare.
  • Time in business 6 of 10 points Record found

15 of this score's 75 points are default points, given because the information does not exist or could not be read. Five of six categories rest on a record we found or a search that found nothing.

This is one score built from six records, and price is one of them. It is not a measure of complaints or legal history alone. How the points are given

05 · Complaints

What complaints say

We show only what the public records say, with their dates. The BBB profile is for Spark Energy, L.P. and covers every state where it sells.

  • Counts: 49 complaints in the last 3 years and 8 in the last 12 months. The profile lists 16 customer reviews and no accreditation.
  • Why the C+: the BBB gives the reason "Business has failed to resolve underlying cause(s) of a pattern of complaints." Its alert describes complaints since 2018 about sales agents at the door and on the phone. It also posts Spark's reply: agents must wear clothing that names Spark and say they do not work for a utility.
  • The PUC: its 2024 report counted 8 complaints about Spark in Pennsylvania.

Agents who say they work for your utility do not. If someone at your door or on the phone asks for a bill or an account number, hang up or close the door and call the number on your bill.

An Illinois lawsuit and a sister brand

On Jan. 16, 2025 the Illinois Attorney General sued Spark Energy, LLC and Spark Energy Gas, LLC in Cook County court, alleging deceptive sales practices toward Illinois homes. Spark filed a motion to dismiss and, at the same time, a federal case raising constitutional issues. Still pending as of Mar. 31, 2026: Via Renewables' 10-Q for the quarter ended that day says all the actions are in the early stages and the parties have resumed settlement talks. We found no later settlement or ruling (read Nov. 1, 2026). These are allegations in another state, so they are not in the score, which counts Pennsylvania actions only. A separate Pennsylvania settlement belongs to Verde Energy, another Via Renewables brand, and is scored under Verde.

06 · The contract

What the Spark contract says

We read the Pennsylvania plan terms for the Choice 12 plan (version dated 10-06-2025) on Oct. 16, 2026.

Spark Pennsylvania residential terms, as read Oct. 16, 2026
TermWhat it says
Early termination fee$0
Monthly feeNone
Who can enrollNew customers; not current customers or past customers from the last 2 years
DisputesBinding individual arbitration before the American Arbitration Association, with a class-action waiver. A written opt-out exists

State rules help here. After you get Spark's disclosure statement you have 3 business days to back out. Because Spark's plans are fixed, it owes you two letters before the term ends: one 45 to 60 days out and an options notice at least 30 days out.

07 · Leaving

Leaving Spark

Pick your next move first, since the switch takes about a billing cycle.

  1. 1
    Check the date.

Your fixed price ends on the date in your contract.

  2. 2
    Choose what comes next.

A new plan, or your utility's default price.

  3. 3
Start the new plan or ask your utility.

The new supplier or your utility handles the switch, which stops Spark.

With no exit fee, you can leave Spark at any time. But remember the 2-year rule: if you leave, Spark's new-customer plans stay closed to you for 2 years.

If you decide to leave, compare other sellers at your address before you do.

Who owns Spark?

  1. 1

The PUC expects that. Note the date, the person and what they promised.

Tell your utility within your first two billing periods. You then owe Spark nothing for that stretch and go back to your old supplier free.

  3. 3
    Take it to the PUC.

File an informal complaint at puc.pa.gov/complaints, or phone 800.692.7380.

11 · Quick answers

Questions, answered

Is Spark Energy legit, or a scam, in Pennsylvania?

Yes. The PUC licenses Spark Energy, LLC. When we scored it on Oct. 16, 2026, it had no Pennsylvania penalty on record, but its BBB grade was a C+. Legit does not mean the best, so read the contract. An agent who says they work for your utility does not.

Is Spark Energy good in Pennsylvania?

It scores 75 out of 100 (Good) on public records. When we scored it on Oct. 16, 2026, it earned full marks for fines and a good price score, and its lowest part was the BBB grade.

What are Spark's electricity rates in PA?

On Oct. 15, 2026 its 12-month Choice 12 plan was 12.95¢ per kWh in PPL's area, and 11.39¢ in PECO's on Oct. 13, from the state's list. Use the tool above for today's plans in your area.

Does Spark charge a cancellation fee in Pennsylvania?

Not on the plan we read. The early termination fee is $0 and there is no monthly fee. The 3-business-day cancel right still applies.

How do I cancel Spark Energy?

You can leave at any time, since the plan we read has no exit fee. Pick your next plan or your utility's default first. The new seller or your utility handles the switch, which stops Spark. Leaving shuts you out of Spark's new-customer plans for 2 years.

What do Spark Energy reviews say?

The BBB profile read Nov. 1, 2026 shows a C+, 49 complaints in 3 years and 16 customer reviews. Billing was the biggest type. The PUC's 2024 report counted 8 complaints about Spark in Pennsylvania.

Can I get Spark's plan if I was a customer before?

Not if you were a Spark customer in the past 2 years. The plan text says the offers are for new enrollments only.

Will Spark cut my electric bill?

Only a little on the prices we read. Its 12-month plan was about 2% under the price to compare, and the price to compare changes during the year.

Is Spark Energy the same company as Verde Energy?

They are separate brands with a common owner, Via Renewables. They have separate licenses, prices and records. See our Verde review.

Why is Spark on my bill?

Someone in your home may have said yes to a Spark plan, perhaps at the door or on the phone. If nobody did, tell your utility inside two billing periods and the switch can be undone.
