Is ION Solar a scam? What the records show
No. ION Solar is a real, licensed company. It has no lawsuits or state actions over its sales in five years.
People search “ION Solar scam” a lot. That doesn’t mean something is wrong. Many people search “scam” before they trust any big purchase. So we checked the records that matter. Here is the evidence board:
The green tiles are the reasons it is not a scam. The orange ones are things to watch. A legit company can still have slow repairs or hidden prices. The rest of this review covers both.

Registered as a Texas solar seller under the new law
Since September 1, 2026, Texas has required home solar sellers to register with the state. ION got registration #24 on September 2, 2026.
The new law covers companies that sell or lease home solar, and their salespeople. ION’s registration runs through September 1, 2027. We confirmed it on October 6, 2026.
The state’s list is brand new and still filling in. So we don’t score registration yet, and a missing listing doesn’t mean a company broke the law. Still, ION is one we could confirm. In Texas, ask any rep for two numbers: the company’s registration and their own. Then look both up on the state’s license search.
ION’s 78: strong on paper, quiet on price
ION earned full marks in four areas, including its legal record and its own crews. It lost the most points for posting no prices or loan fees.
ION missed 22 points. Price cost it 11, because it posts no prices and shows no loan fees. Contract terms cost it 7: 4 for having no production guarantee and 3 because no outside company backs its warranty. The last 4 points went to a missing NABCEP credential, the top installer certification.
We score every company the same way, from public records only. ION does not pay us. Ads never change a score.
10 years on the work, 10 years on leaks
ION backs its install work for 10 years. A separate 10-year warranty covers leaks where the system goes through your roof.
The workmanship warranty is ION’s promise about the job itself: wiring, mounting and the crew’s work. The leak warranty covers the holes in your roof. Both last 10 years.
What ION doesn’t give is a production guarantee, a promise about how much power you will make. The panels carry an output warranty from their maker, but that is not the same thing. Ask what happens if your system makes less power than the estimate.
309 complaints in three years: repairs lead
We read ION’s 30 newest BBB complaints. ION answered every one. Repair and warranty service came up most, then slow replies.
The complaints we read run from February 26 to September 17, 2026. Here is the mix:
- Warranty or repair service 14
- Slow or no response 13
- Other 11
- Sales promises not kept 8
- Billing, loan or refund problems 6
- Roof leaks or roof damage 5
- System not working or making less power 5
- Install, permit or approval delays 3
Each color is one kind of problem in the 30 newest complaints. One complaint can raise more than one problem, so the counts add up to more than 30.
One customer said a roof leaked after the install, and repair dates came and went with no work done. Another made daily calls, emails and texts for a wek and still could not get an assessment scheduled.
In our formula, complaints cost points only if the BBB flags a pattern. ION’s file shows no such flag. Still, ask how fast ION answers service calls where you live.
ION’s own team does the install
ION says “installations & maintenance” are done by its in-house team. In our formula, that is worth the full 12 points for who installs.
It is also a Tesla Certified Installer at the Premier level, worth 2 points. It has no NABCEP-certified installer on staff, though.
One more record, for the full picture. In 2023, the U.S. Department of Labor cited ION over fall protection for its workers, in a news release. That was a worker-safety matter, not a customer one, so it does not affect the score.
10 states on its list, and an active Texas license
ION’s home page lists 10 states. Its menus name 13, and its site has pages for 16. We count the 10.
ION’s home page names:
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Illinois
- Nevada
- New Mexico
- Ohio
- Oregon
- South Carolina
- Texas
- Virginia
In Texas, ION Developer LLC holds license EC-30990. It is active through June 4, 2027. That puts ION in our Texas ranking, tied for 6th of 20. In other states, check the installer on the state licensing board’s website.
What to ask an ION rep
Short questions that get you clear answers.
- What is my price per watt, with every loan fee? Get it on paper. Then compare it with companies that post prices.
- What if my system makes less power than you estimate? ION has no production guarantee, so ask what it will do.
- How fast do you answer service calls here? Repairs lead its complaints. Ask for a real answer.
- What are your license and seller numbers? In Texas, look up both.
