Is Green Mountain Energy worth it? Our 2026 review

Short answer

Partly. Green Mountain Energy scores 68 out of 100 on our public-records scorecard, which we rate "fair." It sells only 100% renewable power, its plain plan costs less than the Texas average, and its contract lets you go to court. The catches: the state gives it a middle complaint rating of 3 of 5, and it was part of a $900,000 state penalty in 2016.

Yes, through certificates. Green Mountain buys renewable energy certificates to match 100% of the power you use each year. Most Texas plans are far lower. The state average is 37%.

What 100% meansFrom Green Mountain's fact label

Each certificate stands for one megawatt-hour of power made from a renewable source. Green Mountain buys enough of them to match all the power you use in a year. Its Pollution Free power is at least 51% Texas wind, and the rest is U.S. wind.

What it doesn't meanThe honest part

The power in your wires is the same grid mix your neighbors get. No company can send only wind power to one house. The certificates are how a plan claims the clean power it paid for.

05 · Complaints

How many complaints does Green Mountain get?

Texans filed 83 complaints about Green Mountain with the state from April through September 2026. After adjusting for size, the state puts it in the middle group: 3 of 5.

The state's complaint rating for Green Mountain

The state sorts every provider into five equal groups by complaints per 1,000 customers. TXU is in the top group, 5 of 5.

State rating: 3 of 5size-adjusted, 2026

Green Mountain sits in the middle. It beats the two worst groups but trails the two best. That's the biggest reason its score is "fair" and not "good."

BBB: A+ letter gradechecked October 4, 2026

The Better Business Bureau gives Green Mountain's Texas profile an A+, its top grade. Only the letter grade counts in our score. Reviews and accreditation don't.

Why we use the rating, not the raw count. Bigger companies get more complaints just because they have more customers. The state's rating counts complaints per 1,000 customers, so it's fair across sizes. Source: PUCT Customer Complaint Statistics and the PUCT complaint scorecard, pulled October 4, 2026.

07 · Penalty and owner

Has Green Mountain Energy been fined?

Yes, once in the last 10 years. In 2016, the state approved a $900,000 penalty that named Green Mountain and three other NRG companies. The order didn't split the amount, so our method counts all $900,000 against each company named.

ReliantGreen MountainDirect EnergyCirro Energy

Same owner, but different plans, prices and records. Green Mountain was named with Reliant in the 2016 penalty below.

  1. Green Mountain Energy is founded as a renewable-electricity retailer.
  2. Green Mountain gets its Texas license (certificate 10009), months before the state’s retail market opens in 2002.
  3. The state’s final order in Docket 46597 sets a $900,000 penalty. It names Green Mountain with Reliant Energy Retail Services, Everything Energy and US Retailers, and doesn’t split the amount. Our Reliant review covers the same order.
  4. The state’s complaint scorecard rates Green Mountain 3 of 5.

How we checked: we searched the state's case files for Green Mountain and the Texas Attorney General's actions. We found no Attorney General lawsuit. We counted Docket 46597 in full under our shared-penalty rule. Cases older than 10 years don't count toward the score.
