No depositIf you meet one of 6 rules
Short answer

First, find out who serves your new address. In most of Texas you pick your electric company, but Austin, San Antonio, most co-op areas and a few regions outside the state's main grid have one provider. Then compare plans, sign up with your new address and pick a start date. You may skip a deposit with a good payment history, if you or your spouse are 65 or older, or if you meet one of the other rules below.

01 · Step 1

Who will serve my new home?

It depends on the address. Most Texans pick their own electric company. Some don't get a choice.

You chooseMost of Texas

In areas served by Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP Texas, TNMP, Lubbock Power & Light and Nueces Electric Cooperative, you pick a retail electric company. Your utility still delivers the power and fixes outages.

One providerSome cities and regions

Austin Energy, CPS Energy in San Antonio, most electric co-ops, and utilities outside the main grid like El Paso Electric serve their areas alone. Call them directly.

Not sure which applies? Use who's my electric utility? or ask your landlord or the seller which company serves the address.

02 · Step 2

How do I pick a plan for my new home?

Compare plans on the state's free site, Power to Choose, then read the fact label before you enroll. Three quick rules keep you out of trouble.

  1. 1
    Pick fixed for 12+ months

It locks your price through the summer. See fixed or variable?

  2. 2
    Run the 3-price test

If the 1,000 kWh price is far below the 500 and 2,000 kWh prices, the plan has a bill-credit trap. See how to read a facts label.

  3. 3
    Price it at your usage

A bigger or smaller home changes the math. Try our plan cost calculator.

Already have a plan you like? Many companies let you take your plan with you if you move within their service area. Ask before you cancel, because moving usually waives the cancel fee anyway.

03 · Step 3

What do I need to sign up for electricity?

Have these ready, and sign up a few days before you move in. Ask for your start date to be the day you get the keys.

The addressExactly as written, with the unit number
The ESI IDThe meter's ID number, if you have it; the company can look it up
A start datePlus your ID and contact details
Moving out, too? Stop service at your old address for the day after you leave, so you don't pay for the next person's power. If you're on a contract, give your company your forwarding address; most waive the cancel fee when you move.
04 · Step 4

Will I have to pay a deposit, and how do I avoid one?

Maybe. Companies can ask for a deposit if you don't meet their credit rules. Direct Energy's terms list six ways to qualify without one, and they follow the state's customer protection rules.
